Copwatch is a group of people who seek to end police repression though directly monitoring the police while they are on duty, engaging the public through questioning, detainment, or arrest. This group's concept has dated back to the black panther party and used by Chicano activists. the first group that called its self "Copwatch" was in Berkley in 1990. Volunteers for the group spend time walking, biking, or driving around the streets, observing police and witnessing/recording police interactions with citizens on camera, videotape, audiotape, and/or paper. Volunteers often concentrate in ares where known "trouble making" cops are assigned or areas of High Police Activity. Copwatch groups also advise people of all their rights and listen to their stories.
