For as long as I can remember, I have loved music. My mother sang and played piano and my father was a drummer. His mother played piano and organ in church, and also had many instruments. When I would stay over, we used to play the organ, harmonicas, accordion and harpsichord. Sadly, I don’t have any of her instruments or my father’s drums.
Naturally, when it came time to play an instrument in school, I did. The first available instrument was the violin. When I would go into the backyard to practice, I'd hear the boy around the block practicing his bagpipe – very cool! Next, I was able to move on to the drums. I moved between 7th & 8th grade, and there were too many percussionists at my new school, so I borrowed a flute from my cousin and learned how to play that. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for me), a lot of drummers went into the woodwind section, so I moved from flute to piccolo to alto saxophone to tenor. My best friend was the only oboe player, and I thought that was a very cool instrument. (Kinda sounded like a bagpipe) In high school, while playing the flute in concert band and tenor saxophone in marching band, I spent class time sitting in a room all by myself learning to play the oboe. Then, (in addition to concert band), I was able to take symphonic band, where I played the oboe. My grandparents paid for me to attend double reed camp, and I would have loved to have tried the english horn and bassoon. During the marching band seasons, I dabbled with the french horn and trumpet. A good friend wanted me to try out for the jazz band on trumpet, so he lent me one for a summer and I learned that. (I never did try out though.) Also during high school, one of my cousins needed some money and was selling his guitar. I didn’t play, but I bought it anyway. My best friend was a bass player, and he gave me a few lessons. They always turned into more of a social encounter, so that didn’t go very far. After high school, I used to go back to visit with the band director, and he would always have me sit in and play. (I think he was hoping to interest some of his students in the oboe.) Many years later, I started working at an exchange, and most of the money I make gets spent there. I was able to acquire several of my instruments by those means. I also went through an “ebay-aholic†spurt when I acquired three additional oboes, as well as both of my bagpipes. These are most of my instruments – some I was not able to get into the picture. Those would include several different recorders, three keyboards, a bell set, a twelve-string acoustic guitar, my piano, and a five-piece drum set. Needless to say, I have a weakness for music. I love instruments; playing, listening (especially live), and I have even dabbled in writing over the years. I know that for me, it is just a deep passion.
