OUTPOSTS (2008, independent), the new full-length from Ottawa-based THE SOFT DISASTER, is about growing up rural. Carefully crafted over the course of two years, the twelve tracks on OUTPOSTS constitute a reflection on the adolescent experience of love and dying in long winters and geographic isolation. Largely departing from the electronic textures that characterized 2006’s ROUGHS/STALLS, OUTPOSTS occupies a musical space between folk-country ballads and guitar rock bombast, banjo-inflected finger-picking and acoustic chamber pop. The record was recorded at home between January 2006 and August 2008.
THE SOFT DISASTER was formed in Ottawa in summer 2001. Now-veterans of the Ottawa music scene, the band has built up a committed following for its attentively produced recordings, and captivating live show. Their compositions are characterized at once by a remarkable intimacy and a significant grandeur, bolstered by finger-picked acoustics and often whispered melodies. Musical touchstones include the harmonic guitar play of Bedhead, the banjo and harmonica pop of Neil Young, and Constellation records guitar climaxes. The band includes members of THE ACORN and THE SOIREE.
ROUGHS/STALLS received repeated airplay nationwide on CBC Radio One and CBC Radio3, on influential US indie WFMU, and charted nationally on campus radio. The band has shared the stage with the Constantines, the Microphones, and Xiu Xiu.
