Elementary Ed tells the story of Daniel and Cory, two 5th graders on the autism spectrum at Ed Smith Elementary in Syracuse, N.Y. The school has been recognized for its acceptance of children with special needs in an ‘inclusive’ classroom.

Like many other urban public schools, Ed Smith educates children on a small budget. Elementary Ed sheds insight about the challenge of teaching children with autism and provides a window of light into their academic future.

Life is inclusive.

We should prepare for it.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Thank you so much for your interest and support in Elementary Ed!

We are both proud and excited to share our story with so many others who support inclusive learning. Our involvement in the documentary was sparked by the instant connection we felt with the children of Ed Smith School who shared a common goal - to learn and experience the classroom as equals. We are so thankful for this opportunity to show how one tiny upstate NY school has succeeded in this endeavor.

The nation's children have rapidly changing needs - disability is an issue now more than ever. We believe we should teach the next generation inclusively, so that at least in schools, disability can be a non-issue. And eventually we can just call this - education.

Parents:

We would so love to share this film with you, to share these children, these families, and the friendship between children with and without disabilities. We would love to show you how the children we followed made tremendous strides socially and academically. Inclusive education is good for all children and we wish you much success with your child's education.

Educators:

Children with autism are often perceived to be the most difficult to include in the regular classroom. This film can be used as a teaching tool in showing the merits of inclusion to future and current educators. It can be viewed in districts without inclusion and show regular ed teachers how to include students with disabilities.

Support Groups:

We were active members of the Central NY ASA while filming in Syracuse, NY. We are so happy to be sharing our film with other chapters and organizations, we think it will be a great teaching tool in educating the teachers in your community.

A portion of all net profits will be donated to Autism Society of America.
