The ensemble is a pool of about 25 musicians, with a background
ranging from classical to jazz via odd specialities like gypsy music,
folk music, baroque music, tango, noise electronica, church organ etc.
Normally the Kitchen Orchestra appears with 10-16 musicians on stage.
It is also fully possible to divide the orchestra and appear in
smaller groups.
On the www.kitchenorchestra.no website you can click "audio" and
listen to a few tracks from experimental to funky. It gives you a
picture of the overall sound, which is very colourful - we try to
have a large palette of sounds that do not necessarily blend well
together but represent individuality, multitude and complexity.
The musical identity of the Kitchen Orchestra is Improvised music -
in a broad sense. We might say that we are more concerned with
working on the flow of musical energy than with a specific musical
style.
The Kitchen apply different working methods from project to project.
Typically our method is not restricted to "play a piece of music" but
we like very much to relate to a concept or maybe to an external
input like spoken text, physical actor, film projection etc.
We are working on different ways of following leaders (conductors)
that create interesting dynamics between chaos and control. We have
played with international leaders like David Kane, Lotte Anker, Steve
Beresford and David Moss, in addition to the internal leaders Didrik
Ingvaldsen, Petter Fadnes, Gunhild Seim and Nils Henrik Asheim.
The orchestra has existed for two years.
