Reno Emo Core (REC) officially got its start in January of 2004 at the infamous Kid-e-Fest 1 (for those unfamiliar with the show: a handful of local high school bands got together for a show and drew a huge crowd.) However, its roots date back to the previous summer under other names, such as Monkeyside Productions (who’s first and only show was the “band-whore fest†featuring Slasher, Disconnect, The Fidels, X The Emo Stud X, Bafabegya, and The Momeraths) with Alex Marko and Zombie Monkey Productions.
Owner and booking agent Bronson Brimhall started booking shows in the Reno area in mid-August 2003. After attempting to book a show at Ark-a'ik (a long gone club in Reno) he found that he had landed himself a job.
"I attended some meeting at Ark-a'ik about a co-op; I was one of the few that returned for a follow up. Then I just started, Steve Peto asked how many shows I could do, so I guess I just kinda fell into doing shows," Brimhall said.
Brimhall, who had no experience with booking shows before this point, had to learn quickly. Steve Peto, who managed Ark-a'ik at the time, was preparing to leave for Oakland, CA and was going to hand over the work load to Brimhall and a partner. With the partner not being able to handle the pressure, Brimhall took over shows.
Not everything came that easy to REC. The next few months consisted of losing business partners, name changes, and eventually Ark-a'ik shutting down in November of 03. Ark-a'ik soon reopened under new management, and Brimhall resumed his position as booking agent, bringing in Steve Owens to help with shows and designing flyers to promote.
REC continued to book shows at Ark-a'ik and gain a reputation until April of 04, when an incident with a well known hardcore band was the proverbial "straw that broke the camels back" and shut down Ark-a'ik for good. The club became a country bar, and REC got the boot.
REC went on hiatus for the next few months until an offer to book The Lyndsay Diaries came up in July of 04. Brimhall contacted another Reno venue, Club Infinity, and began doing shows there. Booking tours left and right, REC had an excellent run at Infinity.
However, in January of 05, more people began booking shows at the club, and Infinity changed its policy to raise the percentage it was taking from the door. REC began to lose money and was forced to cancel the majority of its upcoming shows. The last REC show at Club Infinity was on April 8th, 2005.
REC has recently begun booking shows at a new venue, Blue Angel Coffee House in Sparks. The current REC roster consists of Brimhall, who owns the business and handles booking; Steve Owens who does flyer design and Katie Timmons who works the door at shows. They're currently looking for help with a street team.
REC has booked some impressive band, including, but not limited too; UK Subs, Anti Freeze (Kung Fu Records), codeseven(Equal Vision Records),Hidden In Plain View(drive-thru records),Ten Foot Pole(Go Kart Records), Hellogoodbye(drive-thru records), Self Against City (Rushmore Records), VAUX(Equal Vision Records), The Higher(Fiddler Records), Jenoah(drive-thru records), The Lyndsay Diaries(The Militia Group), The Casualties (Sideonedummy), Defiance(Punkcore Records), Allister(drive-thru records, )Himsa(Prosthetic Records), The Chemistry(Razor and Tie), Steel Train(drive-thru records), Over It(Lobster Records), Socratic(drive-thru records), Before Today(Equal Vision Records), Stars Hide Fire(I Surrender Records), Slick Shoes(Sideonedummy Records), Lances Hero(Science is a Liar), Never Heard Of It(unmotivated records), Side Walk Slam(Tooth and Nail Records), An Angle(drive-thru records), Fear Before the March of Flames(Equal Vision Records.)
