Born in Saquarema, a small city an hour and half drive from Rio de Janeiro, Débora grew up surrounded by music. In Brazil it’s quite common to sing, play drums and dance samba at weekend parties, and Débora was no exception. Though she was getting a lot of attention as a singer, her primary interest was academic, and so Débora kept singing as a hobby and became a pharmacist by profession.
When Débora came to New York, she continued her professional interest in pharmacy and became a New York State licensed pharmacist as well. When she met the pianist and composer, John Watts, he encouraged her to return to her love of music and it wasn’t long before the two began working together forming a very eclectic band called Brazilian Breeze.
Débora’s love of Brazilian musical forms, including bossa nova, samba, and Popular Music of Brazil (MPB) attracted performances with musicians of all genres. She has performed samba shows with Pé-de Boi & Saveiro, chorinho with Choro Ensamble and many Brazilian jazz concerts with great musicians such as the Cuban pianist Oriente Lopez, the trumpeter Mark Morganelli, and the guitar player Billy Newman, to name a few.
Currently Débora is finishing her album debut featuring the jazz legend Benny Golson as special guest soloist.
