About Me

heleenvanhaegenborgh.be Heleen Van Haegenborgh – pianist (making + playing)- studied at the Ghent conservatory with Claude Coppens and Daan Vandewalle. The improvisation lessons with Godfried Willem Raes (Logosfoundation.org) were crucial for her musical development. She followed master classes with Jan Michiels, Boyan Vodenicharov, Louis Pas, John Tilbury, Luc Vaes, and Claire Chevalier.
Played for Festival van Vlaanderen, Courtisane Festival, Blue note Festival, Happy New Ears, Vooruit Gent, Internationaal Filmfestival (Rotterdam), Seeds and Bridges festival (Hull), Manchester University, Cafe Oto (London), Roulette (New York), Ossia Fine Arts Gallery (Chicago), Brakke Grond (Amsterdam), Theater Kikker (Utrecht), Axes (Eindhoven), Surrey University, Netwerk Aalst, Flemish Opera Antwerp...
Her musical activities are a series of different projects where new music and extended techniques on piano are the starting-point. She’s trying to develop projects in which she brings new experimental music approachable for a wider public without doing concessions on the difficulty of the pieces. This happens through eg. working with other media ( ‘Songbooks’ and ‘Zen for film’), recovering the original function of the music ( ‘Re:construction’), adapting the environment on the contents of the music (“contcont”)…Now she's working on two main projects. Wt. 'Cinéma invisible' (with Jasper Rigole, Kristof Roseeuw, Jürgen De Blonde) will be developped in de Vrijplaats voor muziek Gent). With Femke Gyselinck and Kelly Schacht she's working on a Hörspiel project..

Repertoire: James Tenney, John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Morton Feldman, George Crumb, Peter garland, Thomas Smetryns, Jonathon Kirk...
Since 2006 she has a duo with composer Thomas Smetryns. They bring own compositions for piano, electric guitar; 78 rpm players, tape, inside piano. Their cd was released at the Logosfoundation (2007). Heleen just finished a cd with Esther venrooy electronics (Entr'acte London). Further she works on productions with Hermes Ensemble. Several composers wrote pieces for her: Guy De Bièvre, Thomas Smetryns and Daan Janssens.

Reviews

THE WIRE On Mock Interiors Esther Venrooy finds her in the company of fellow composer and improviser Heleen Van Haegenborgh. The pair concentrate on shorter forms ‹ the CD contains 11 tracks ‹ but the prevailing heartbeat remains slow, and the music is no less intense and thoroughly worked. Pianist Van Hagenborgh has studied with, amongst others, John Tilbury, and it shows in her timing and touch. But there¹s dark Romanticism to her playing too, best exemplified in the sombre minor harmonies of Impromptu Dhalia, which Venrooy extends and explores with the breathtaking precision and sensitivity of a brain surgeon. (Dan Warburton)
EARLABS ".....I have heard many examples of people combining electronics with acoustic sources. But there are many ways to fuck that up and much less ways to do it right. This time it has been done very well....The balance between electronic and acoustic is really splendid...." (Jos Smolders) More: http://www.earlabs.org/release/review.asp?reviewid=1137

GONZ0 (circus) "...Mock Interiors grijpt ons vanaf de eerste second bij ons nekvel en laat ons niet meer los..."About Mock Interiors

Electronic composer Esther Venrooy and pianist Heleen Van Haegenborgh's collaboration explores the synergy of acoustic piano with electronics and digital sound processing. Their compositions aim to draw the listener into the inner workings of the piano. Employing a battery of microphones, resonating elements and tiny inaudible mechanical sounds are captured, manipulated and magnified through electronic means, resulting in fragile textures where the boundaries between electronic and acoustic sound become blurred.
