Though the East Coast is more famous for the raw sounds of the rap and punk groups it spawned, singer/songwriter Jon Kinsella is going to add alternative rock/folk artist to that list. The New York/New Jersey-bred artist is ready to conquer the hearts and minds of fans across the country.
Kinsella grew up in the Bronx for many years before relocating to Hamilton, NJ. He grew up with music since before he could crawl. The turning point in his musical career came when he was nine years old. “I remember the day my father took out his old records and record player and let me at it,” he says. It wasn’t long until he asked for his first guitar.
Kinsella has since dabbled and experimented with numerous music genres. In 1999, at the ripe age of 15, he recorded his first album with his then punk band. The experience led to his buying a four-track recorder, as well as studying music in college at West Chester, PA. There, he was exposed to a variety of music by working as a DJ at the college radio station and by producing music on his own.
“I began to dive into the production realm,” he explains, “which really helped me develop as a songwriter/musician because I started to do a lot of home-recordings/basement tapes on my own. At that time, it was an incredible phase of experimenting, mixing genres and really finding myself as a musician.”
As such, Kinsella’s music draws from a diverse array of influences. Bands like The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sublime fuel his music, while the work of rapper 2Pac drives his lyrical work. “His lyrics were just so raw, honest and covered everything,” he says.
Jon Kinsella is currently working on his debut EP, Unwelcome Guest.
