Carol Sokoloff & Trio Espresso

About Me

Carol Sokoloff is a Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter, performing in the Victoria, BC region with the excellent jazz combo Trio Espresso featuring Kenny Seidman, piano; James Young, acoustic bass and Kelby MacNayr, drums. Known for her warm vocals and an improvised approach to the standards, Carol Sokoloff is also a talented songwriter who is now creating 'New Standards' – songs with the style and feel of the American songbook. Indeed Carol had the good fortune to meet some of the great songwriters of that era, specifically the late great Harold Arlen and his collaborator, lyricist Yip Harburg.Their magic has somehow rubbed off and can be heard in the words and music of Sokoloff's original songs. Jazz Vocalist, Kurt Elling, writes, "Carol Sokoloff is a budding and intuitively gifted songwriter. Her composition, 'Winter Moon" reminds me of the work of Hoagy Carmichael..."Carol Sokoloff and Trio Espresso have been making 'Tasty Jazz' for the past five years, playing clubs, concerts and private engagements. They were featured with a full outdoor concert at the 2009 Victoria Jazzfest, whose program states: One of Victoria’s finest jazz vocalists, Carol Sokoloff radiates a rare warmth and burnished vocal technique from the bandstand. Confident enough to bring some improvisatory flair to her performance of jazz standards, Sokoloff is also a talented songwriter who has composed many notable songs in the spirit of the American Songbook. “Carol Sokoloff is an intuitively gifted songwriter.” – Kurt Elling. The band is currently recording a long-awaited debut CD.
