Eventually the rumblin' got so bad mama just scooped me and sis up and headed for the barn. It was just then when I saw pastor Charlie jump on top of a peach box and start hollerin' about repenting. Well, me and the Lord been on good terms since I was six when I fell into a mine shaft and came out with nothing but a skinned knee and some soot on my face. Naturally I was the first to tell Charlie that it wasn't God who was mad, it was the Mountain. Ya see, ever since my papa and all those men built this town that mountain's been looking to get even. I know it was him who kidnapped Julie Willard. She walked up there one day and just never came back. I never could understand why the mountain hated us, maybe this little town stole some of his majesty, or perhaps like most all things in nature he just wants everyone to know who's really in charge. Anyway, just as I was tellin' Charlie the truth I looked up and saw something that would make a track-layer cower. The whole mountain seemed to just come right out of the ground, like an oak that can't stand the wind. It hung there for a second suspended before all our eyes, then it just came down...
