Couple’s song shines in ’Come Early Morning’
Irving: Singing in new film another chapter in duo’s love story
December 2006
By RACHEL LAMONICA / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
After more than 20 years together, Jeannie and Jerry Max Lane are singing a new tune.
The south Irving couple are celebrating the release of their new song on a movie soundtrack that also includes popular country artists Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.
"It’s a love song, and I think the melody draws the listener’s ear to the lyrics," said Mr. Lane, who noted he wrote it in about 15 minutes.
Titled "What’s Done Is Done," the song is featured in Come Early Morning, the recently released independent film written and directed by actress Joey Lauren Adams and starring Ashley Judd.
In the film, Mrs. Lane can be seen performing the song with a house band in the background while Ms. Judd dances with co-star Jeffrey Donovan.
"I love her [Jeannie’s] voice; it’s so powerful," said Ms. Adams, well known for her roles in Big Daddy and Chasing Amy. "Their song sort of sums up the movie without being too much."
Mrs. Lane said she believes the tune was chosen from among several the couple submitted because of the way it pulls scenes in the film together through its lyrics, which talk about letting go of the past and moving forward with the future.
"They really thought we had written it specifically for the movie, even though we hadn’t, and took it straight from the demo without re-recording it," said Mrs. Lane, 50.
This isn’t the Lanes’ first bit of fame. The couple is well-known among country music circles in North Texas as well as in Nashville, where some consider Mr. Lane to be a bit of a legend.
He has written songs for the likes of Charley Pride, Webb Pierce and Lynn Anderson. He also wrote the 1992 hit song for George Strait titled "Gone as a Girl Can Get."
"I’m a lucky man any way you look at it," said Mr. Lane, 67, who left the Irving police force in 1965 to pursue his musical ambitions full time. "Without a good idea, you don’t have a song. Jeannie gives me good ideas. I find the writing process to be creative and fulfilling."
The couple’s love for music and their love for each other have been their rock as they have learned to live with Mr. Lane’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, a battle that has taken them on some highs and lows in 12 of their 21 years together.
" We sing together. We write together. We have Parkinson’s together. No matter how bad anything is, there’s always one little thing, like being a part of this movie, that brings it all back together," Mrs. Lane said. "The storms never last. We shake them off and move on."
Although Mrs. Lane works full time for Dallas-based Southwest Airlines as a reservation agent, she and her husband perform as often as they can at private parties as well as charity events.
" They are the most in love couple. It’s been a real privilege getting to know these two great people who have great things in their hearts," said Arnold Sanchez, owner of the Silverado Ranch, where the movie premiere after-party was held Nov. 15 .
" Their story is so beautiful," added Ms. Adams. "The music pulls them through, and there’s never been any competition, only love and respect for each other."
