For starters I grew up in East Tennessee. T-bone entered the picture in 5th grade. Mom tried to get me to take piano lessons as a kid, but I insisted that piano was for girls. I never met a stranger, and based on that my dad said I would turn out a preacher or a politician. The slide paid my way through college (East Tennessee State) where I successfully flunked out with 8 credit hours left to graduate because I smoked to much weed, but hey that's life I guess. I studied under Pat Bivens, William Harris, Tom Lundberg, Ric Simerly, David Bubsey, and my most influencial teacher Dr. Benjamin Caton who taught me how to "listen". I spent the remainder of the summer playin' in a blues band called " Blue Rapture", and then I hit the road to Orlando
Orlando has proved to be an interesting place to say the least. I was a mess when I moved down, and music hit the self while I attempted to focus on "sobriety". Oh and did I focus on it. I turned into one of the biggest rule keeping, judgemental, SELF-righteous people you would ever come across. I would like to blame that on someone else, but we all make our own choices.
From a very young age I knew God...yes I said GOD had marked my life, and I started running. In my mid twenties, when my only instrument was trombone, I started hearing these song in my head. This led to picking up the piano (man those thing way a ton) , and I have been dabbling with it for 4 or 5 years. Singing came naturally, but with much resistance from peers. They didn't understand, and yes there was the learning curve. I've had no formal training on the piano or voice, and my only explanation is a loving God.
Most of these songs were born out of my own stupid choices, hurts, frustrations, and just life in general. Religion is very empty to me. How easy is it to throw on $1000 suit, flip off the homeless guy you pass on the way, scoff at the prostitute, and then waltz into "church" for a splendid rendition of greet your neighbor, and Amazing Grace only to be followed by gluttony at the Golden Corral? If your waiting for an answer, just walk out your door and ask your neighbor.
These songs may never go top 40, but that is not the intent. My hope is that they speak to your heart. There are many songs to come, that involve many different styles layered with varying emotions. Believe you me, I will keep you on your toes. Oh yeah, in case you were wandering I moved back to finish those 8 credit hours in 2005, and moved back to O-town in the following fall.
Life is what you make of it. Don't keep too many secrets, because one day your lies will all run together, and you want even remember who the real you is. Hope you enjoy the tracks, and remember if the "church" scoffs at you the real JESUS has got your back.
