Mom was a very cool person, a lovely lady and an amazing actress.
That's the thing about movie stars, although they may be gone, they actually remain with us ... if we want to see them. All it takes is the click of a mouse.

She was a big influence on us. I recall the first time she and my Dad brought me onto a Hollywood movie set. I was eight years old and Mom was making a movie with John Forsythe called “It Happens Every Thursday†at Universal City Studios. We got to the sound stage where Mom had just completed the day's filming. The set, a reproduction of a small-town newspaper office complete with printing press, typesetting machinery and old manual typewriters - was dark and deserted. The place looked empty and dead.
Then a few minutes later, we went to a studio screening room, to watch what filmmakers call the ‘dailies’, the film that was shot on the set the day before. When the screen lit up that day, it was magic and it changed my life!
All of a sudden that cold, dead-looking set came alive. It was bright and busy. The typewriters were clicking and the printing press pounding. People were scurrying around, rushing to put the latest edition of their newspaper to bed.
To me, in that darkened screening room, this was REAL. The lifeless set I’d been on moments earlier had come to life. And that's when I figured out what movies were all about. It was the magic that happens when actors, lights, make up, costumes, cameras and so much more all come together at just the right time to create LIFE.
It's been a long time since that day at Universal City Studios, but I've never forgotten it. I can truly say it shaped the rest of my life.
And, as I mentioned, we're the lucky ones. We can relive that moment, and many others, with a click of the mouse.
