MAN/Martin Ace

About Me

Martin AceBorn just after the end of the Second World War in Swansea South Wales.Around the age of thirteen Martin began playing the Guitar and singing with his schoolmates and he was listening to Radio Luxembourg which was spreading American rock’n’roll across Europe. He was crazy about Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Woody Guthrie, Buddy Holly, Elvis and Blues legends Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. At sixteenhe joined his first band, The Jets, as Bassist together with drummer Terry Williams who would also play with Martin later in MAN.The Jets performed often in Hamburg up until 1966. The progressive and psychedelic Rockband,MAN was formed out of, The Dream and The Bystanders in 1968 and Martin joined them a year later after the first two albums. For a little time he played guitar but his first intrument was and is the bass guitar. After making two more albums with MAN Martin left to pursue other projects.MAN finally split in 1976 only to reform seven years later in 1983. . From then on Martin stayed while others came and went like ships in the night THer have been at least seventeen musicians who can say they have played with MAN. Over a dozen albums over four decades and with the constant personnel changes each one is different.Even though he never left MAN it never stopped him from doing other projects. He played in Rock ’n’ Roll und Folk Bands like Cromlech, Motors, Flying Aces, Racketeers, Midnight Shift, Omigosh and recently Ace Jackson, wrote and produced for The Rockin’ Sikh, and even played him in the cult film Twin Town.

Sounds Like: MAN LATEST Man have never been a band to avoid a challenge and their new album is no exception With days to go last November the studio engineer walked leaving the band high and dry with twelve unmixed tracks. A row had broken out between producer band member Phil Ryan and the studio engineer over technical problems at the studio. The band had no alternative but to suspend the operation. On top of this there were personal differences between members of the band leading to a three to two split .Martin Ace ,Josh Ace and Phil Ryan will continue with James Beck guitar and Rene Robrahn on drums .James is a member of Josh’s band Ringolevio and Rene has been working with James Brown musical director Fred Wesley, Meanwhile after a lot of ducking and diving Man were able to get their hands on the recordings and with the help of Allan Murdoch, studio boss at Tonstudio Holstein in Germany, Phil was able to painstakingly piece together nearly all the missing material. Martin in the meantime had written two new brand new songs for the album and recorded them prior to the mixing sessions at Tonstudio Holstein with the help of Rene, Allan and Dulli Engel. Man continue to suspend time and the new album will thrill old fans and new listeners alike. Josh has undoubtedly taken the ascendancy as a songwriter, listen to the title track Kingdom of Noise but Martin’s psychedelic adventure Russian Roulette will still raise a smile and a hair or two. Phil Ryan’s mercurial production has turned this album into a Man classic . Kingdom of Noise will be released on Point through Voiceprint Spring 2009
