The music of Alter Nero (David Nierse, 1983) has been a journey of remarkable development. His teenage years in the Southern village of Terheijden in the Netherlands were filled with the energetic beats from the Prodigy and the hard rock music from bands as Deftones, System of a Down, Tool and Rage Against the Machine. After years of experimenting with music software creating disturbing beats and infinite tunes, 2001 saw the emerging of complete songs from the hand of David, then working under the pseudonym of MisterDaviz. Most notable was the remix of Cypress Hill’s hit “Rock Superstarâ€, which was transformed from a firm hard rock breaker, into an atmospheric down-tempo relax tune.
After David had lived and worked in Dublin, Ireland for half a year, he got new inspiration for creating full-length songs. This was expressed by the garageband.com hit “Morning Rainâ€, reaching number 2 in the experimental electronica chart, and a 31st place in the all time chart of that genre. After this success, David took the hike again, this time spending five weeks in Saint Petersburg, Russia. After drowning himself in vodka, partying in Petersburg’s notorious clubs, and learning few words of Russian on the Polytechnic University of St. Petersburg, David returned home to start programming new beats again. In this period (spring 2004) the first samples and ideas of “Take It Back†saw the light. At this time MisterDaviz regarded this track as his ultimate masterpiece.
In the meantime he moved to Amsterdam to start a study of Media & Culture, specifying finally in Film Studies. Simultaneously, his success on garageband.com wasn’t unnoticed, and in the autumn of 2006 Daviz received a message from Los Angeles. Polish expatriate Bal, jazz musician and producer, invited him to come over to the City of Angels to work on some music. However both of their music styles were quit different (jazz contra rock; the only similarity would be that it was both electronic music), David decided to take this opportunity, and with a nothing to loose mentality he was on his way to California. Bal was just starting up his own label “PBM Recordsâ€, and during David’s three weeks in LA he decided to mix and master David’s new Drum ‘n Base smasher “Last One In Lineâ€. Bal also just started collaborating with director Edwin Mary, and with the progress of David’s song this resulted in a music video, entirely shot in Los Angeles. By this time, David transformed his artist name to Alter Nero, referring to the crack-brained Roman emperor, but with an “altered†ego.
So with a professionally mixed song and a music video in his pocket, David returned to his homeland. LOIL was digitally released, and plans were made to make a full-length album of Alter Nero. However, both Bal and David’s ideas about the album diverged increasingly. This turned to a point where David decided it was time to break with Bal, and in the summer of 2007 they split ways.
Soon after this, David met producer Bjorn de Water, who owns his studio in village of Maassluis (Ned). After a few meetings it seemed that both had similar ideas about music, and David got so enthusiastic about this that he decided to make a short length CD: the Alter Nero EP. They remixed LOIL, David digged up his masterpiece “Take It Back†and an old composition called “Dark Groomsâ€. They spent days in the studio perfectioning the sound of the songs, and David also came up with new material: “The Great Escapeâ€, †Comming For Breakfast†and “Knives And Forksâ€. Only the latter didn’t make it to the final master disk. The EP was mastered in London and after few months of drawing and editing the design for the EP was ready. In February 2008 David self-released the first 100 copies.
Meanwhile, David got his Bachelor diploma in his studies, finishing it with an innovative thesis about Star Wars and sound in cinema. The film world started to pull on him now. And in the summer of 2008 David returned to Los Angeles, this time doing two internships in Hollywood; one for film company New Regency (on the Fox lot), and one for independent film producer Christopher Johnson. This has been an extraordinary and spiritual experience for David, and one big step towards his dream: working on films and making music in a creative environment, surrounded by ambitious, creative and resolute people.
His plans are to finish a film school in America. His obstacle: the bureaucratic nightmare of obtaining an American visa. But by graduating in the States he can get one step closer to a working permit, so now he’s looking for refunds to join the L.A. Film School. In the meantime the Alter Nero EP is digitally released through iTunes, and David is promoting it through Internet radio stations, which resulted in a top 10 spot on the KSPC Radio Electronic chart.
