People believe that the music industry is in a state of emergency.
James Jean-Baptiste, also known as "Kaz Retro" believes otherwise.
Born June 6th, 1983 in a small village in Haiti, he migrated here as
the oldest of 7 with his parents. Growing up being down and out for
the majority of his childhood, Kaz's pastime would be playing music.
"Music started for me when I was real young. I was introduced to the
70's and 80's by my mother. Malik Pendelton, writer of Seven Days for
Mary J .Blige mentored me in the essence of songwriting as a whole and
introduced me to the business of it. He also let me write on tracks
that were submitted to Wyclef Jean, Alicia keyes, Gwen Stefani, etc." Over the years, Kaz has attempted to make a number of business
accomplishments. Joining Sound Abuse, a small hip hop group from
Jersey, he helped co-produce a single for them using the "Martial
Arts" riddim that landed them a meeting with Castro Pink, the VP of
Kings of Kings Records. It was the first for any hip hop group in
history. After parting ways with the group, he later joined "Final
Element" where he co-managed their singer Steeve Sam and brokered a
deal with with one of the largest undergarment companies, Victorias
Secrect that gave them the opportunity to market their music and sell
it with their lingerie as a premium for Valentines Day.
Despite the all business opportunities that were attempted, they were
never fulfilled. Kaz remained unfazed. Honing his craft for
songwriting as well as befriending some important people, Kaz started
his own company, "Kaz Makes Kool Music." With his influences being
Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Yanni, and Marvin Gaye to
name a few, Kaz's prediction of the so-called music industry being in
chaos seems to be no threat to him. "My music represents outer space,
the struggle, persistence, complex
harmonies as well as melodies, discipline, and diction. There's
nothing wrong with the industry. It's just making room for me."Fin...
