Wrongs Of Passage

About Me

Underpass writes fractured electro and bleak electronics for today's stark urban environment.
Half miami, half industrial South Wales.
The Underpass sound is dense, atmospheric, often claustraphobic, pulling in strands of detroit electro, contemporary electronica and the nascient strains of dub, underpinned with a b-boy sensibility.
His incendiary live laptop sets have taken him around the country, with the likes of Cylob [warp], Lektrogirl [rephlex], Max Tundra [warp], Kode 9 [rephlex], Acid Casuals [novamute], Kutchi [adcam], Boep [adcam], Sh!tmat [planet mu], Con Brio, Bovaflux, Rich Thair [of red snapper], Steve Hellier [death in vegas] and Johnny Boy [novamute] amongst others.
Releases:
Underpass: Variable Architecture e.p.
Underpass has stepped aside from his upfront electro output with this 5 track ep of sheer sonic warmth. 'Spazhop' introduces itself with subtle electronic percussion and synths joined by the ghostly prescence of a soothing guitar...the sound of glitch hop that envokes emotion and mellow joy. Track two,'Let Go', carries the torch from 'Spazhop' and unfolds into mesmerising downtempo elegance taking in the soundtrack to a sunset over a city with dislocated vocals and washes of blips, bleeps and laidback beats. Following on is 'Sidings', immersed in fluid effects and more horizontal drums. The ep then takes a turning into a wonderland of guitar complemented rhythms and jittery patterns that sway and slide effortlessly. Through 'Anyone' we are lead to he closing piece. A love story of rich hip hop infused beats and floating walls of sound that come from a place where the likes of My Bloody Valentine have in the past created such beautiful pieces of music that are both delicate and confident...'Watching You Sleep', electronic angels that watch over us. A truly involving release destined for many late night moments and memories.

Underpass Sunday Comedown Sessions [that were]:
The Long Drop: 3 Years of the Underpass Sunday Comedown Sessions
Well some of you might know, some of you might not, but after 3 years, I've given up the Sunday Comedown Sessions radio show, due to personal commitments.
It's been a brilliant 3 years with everyone on nsbradio.co.uk, and I hope to be working with them all again in the future. Thankyou to everyone who supported the show, tuned in and made me feel like it was all worth it.
As promised I've done one final mix. No trickery, no clever mixing, no traktor, no edits, just two decks, and a stack of my favorite tunes from the last three years, strung together in my usual haphazard style. Just my little way of saying goodbye, and thankyou to those who enjoyed the show. It should just about fit on an 80 minute cd, and there is a sleeve to print, cut out and keep.

Quotes:
"Head bashing bass electronica here from ex-punk Lee Marshall, combining Begg-like electronica, punched beats and blips galore on this multi-tempo ep. Battle is a slow jungle darkness full of growler bass and quirky synth lines. Automatic is buckfunky with oodles of knob twiddling to warp the head, anchored by a shout out loud vocal loop and layered bleeps. Flip over for downbeat head mash electronica to test the limitations of your speakers." Mike Hogan (Breakspoll/Mofo Mag)
"A strong debut for both Cardiff based producer Lee Marshall aka Underpass and Urban Planning Records. Whether you're after glitched-up electronics or off-centre floor shakers this is pure quality - check it out!" (delta-9.net)
"Each of the mixes here is standout material, perfect 'listening' electro for that next mix cd project!"(Battlemonkey.net)
"Underpass [is] a studiously bleak experiment in sinister, breaks-ridden leftfield electronica, fielding the mentalist digital drumn'bass energy of Squarepusher in a gritty and relentlessly dark urban backdrop." (Radio 1: Session in Wales)
"This is excellent, hell dark techy electro breaks. Acidic bleeps and great undercurrents of sub bass. If you like the stuff that say, Radioactive Man plays and produces, you'll dig this." (Buzz Magazine)
Live, Underpass is ferocious, crouched over his sampler, keyboards, decks and the little FX thing which we don't know what it's called, his music a blend of hard breaks, distorted vocals and Squarepusher type rumblings." (Boobytrap Records)
