Music:
I love all different styles of music. Anything from Janis Joplin to Louis Armstrong. Everthing from Hip Hop to Indie Rock. I love latin music, Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue! I even love Operas and MGM musicals by Irving Berlin or George Gershwin. I also really love music that is folk inspired, there is such great beauty and simplicity when all the noise is stripped bare untill it is just a voice and just an instrument. It's so interesting to me how music recalls the memory of certain places and people. What I love most about music is how it keeps a sensory timeline of your life, for example everytime I hear The Smashing Pumpkins it reminds me of when I was a 7th grader. I can remember all the things I was feeling at that exact moment. I can even picture myself walking down the halls of my junior high and being engulfed in the stench of adolescent bodies. I recall the great urgency we all felt to hurry & get somewhere before the bell rang.

Movies:
My all time favorite movie is Titus by Julie Taymor, who also directed Frida. I think that City of God is one of the most powerful movies I have seen in a very long time. Latin Cinema has finally proven itself with movies like Maria Full of Grace and Amores Perros, it makes me feel so proud to be a Latina. I also love movies by Pedro Almodovar; About My Mother, Talk to Her, and Bad Education. I'm a really big fan of all of Wes Anderson's films, his characters are so uniquely stylized. I like Todd Solandz films, he directed Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness. I love any movie with the french actress Audrey Tatou in it and I love anything with the screen siren Marilyn Monroe. I love film noirs like Double Indemnity. I also like most of the European films that were made in the 1960's, alot of good cinema came out of the 60's and 70's everywhere. I love the classics like On the Waterfront, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, ect. I could go on and on so I might as well just stop now.
Television:
PBS, A&E, The History Channel, (my secret sin is that I love to watch those shows about murder and crime and mysteries solved like Law and Order, CSI, Cold Cases).
Books:
The Country Under My Skin by Giaconda Belli is hands down my favorite book ever written! It is her memoir, she recounts being a Sandanista who helped lead a guerilla movement that overthrough the Nicaraguan government! She is also a poet so it is beautifully and insightfully written. I also am crazy about Henry Miller. He was so insanely intense, i just get lost in his work and i absolutely love that!
Heroes:
Jorge Ramos is my hero and he has been ever since I was a little girl. I grew up watching him on UNIVISION. He is a news journalist, a writter, a political activist, and an ambassador. He is truly amazing! This spring my husband took me to Borders where unbeknownst to me Jorge Ramos was having a book signing. Jeff waited in line with me untill I got to shake the mans hands, exchange kisses on the cheek, and get my book autographed. I got the chance to tell him what he meant to me and how proud i am of him. Jeff photographed the whole thing so I can always remember it! Jorge was so kind, humble, patient, and funny (he made a joke about Jeff's hair) just the way you'd imagine a hero should be. I will always love my husband for doing that for me, he didn't even really know who Jorge Ramos was!
