the Casual Occupation

About Me

The Casual Occupation is my vast and ill-defined solo project. Largely improvisational and orchestral in nature, it has a few regular contributors: Kenneth Gilbert has been known to play piano and upright bass, Eli Resnick weighs in on guitar, bass, and tenor saxophone, and Tom Hnatow can be found behind the banjo, violin, lap steel, and/or theremin. There have been five or six (largely accidental) live shows. Our most rehearsed (4 practices!) performance was recorded, and we consisted of two guitars, accordion, cello, banjo, piano, doublebass, drums, mandolin, tenor saxophone, scattered percussion, trumpet, synth, and several vocalists. We tend to spring up at parties, and we can be commissioned for soundtracks and opening slots if given plenty of notice or absolutely none at all.

My Interests

My Blog

It's been awhile since I rapped at ya.

I bought a house in Virginia. I started a proper, honest-to-goodness blog. I'm down to one band, for which I am writing new material. We've finished our album and we're playing Fort Reno on July 19th ...

Bacon, of the not-so-Francis variety.

You sizzling temptress you! Thick-cut, hickory-smoked Jezebel! I will not, however, throw you to the dogs. I will, instead, throw you into my frying pan. By the porkful forkful. I have recently ...

I'm getting a new job in a couple weeks! I'll be making more moolah too. After I pay off my credit card and get the front brakes replaced on my car and pay off my dad and buy some new work shoes and t...

Beware the staggering mundanity!

There are those who repeatedly urge me to "start a blog." These people are fools and halfwits, because, as is clearly demonstrated herein, any blog of mine would be a stultifying slog through the minu...

La cucaracha!

I am so against cockroaches. I lean against them and crush them against the walls, I proclaim my political and philosophical opposition to them (often to the same walls), I write white papers expressi...

Somewhat updated.

Help! I can't stop listening to Death Cab For Cutie! I've got four albums' worth here on the old ipod, and they've been on repeat for days. I just put Transatlanticism on again for the first time in a...

The End of an Error.

All the food pictures are now gone. In their place are music pictures. It was an idea that became too popular for its own good and, given that this is a band page, maybe a little out of place. On...

New songs! Live from our only show!

I finally put the songs up from the Velvet Lounge show on February 1st. It's the sound-board recording, and the dude really had his hands full, so it's a little messy, the bass sounds kind of like a d...

Addendum to notes on the Velvet Lounge

Apparently the sound guy quit after our show on Wednesday. I'd like to think that the Casual Occupation is at least partly responsible for that. Perhaps we should have seen it coming when, ten minutes...

Notes on the Velvet Lounge.

Oy gevalt! That was a fun show last night. Thank you, everyone who came out and hooted and hollered for us, and the Seldon Plan, and Lucia Lie (who are playing in Richmond tonight). Brendan the sound ...
