Exceptional Edward

About Me

Following a serendipitous meeting at a Columbus music store between former neighbors, Jason Turner and Brian Gillis, in 2006, the band Exceptional Edward was born. Shortly after adding a bass player, appropriately named Garth, and lead guitarist Dan Gillis to the mix, the band began playing shows around the city and throughout the Midwest region.
Drawing from influences like Coldplay, Oasis, Snow Patrol and Radiohead, Exceptional Edward combines elements of classic Brit Pop with a contemporary feel, reminiscent of bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Band of Horses and the Flaming Lips. The result is an original sound featuring catchy hooks, infectious melodies and thoughtful lyrics.
In addition to releasing two albums; The Exceptional EP (Dec. 2006) and the Daily Vault Indie Album of the Year, Lost at Sea (April 2008), the band has been featured on several compilation projects, soundtracks and radio stations including, CD101, Columbus Alive Radio, Merit Badge Records, Best of Columbus and Sonic Jive.
After undergoing several lineup changes the band has added two new members and is in the process of recording their third album, Put out the Fire, which will be released in the spring of 2010.

Sounds Like: "I unequivocally love Exceptional Edward’s 11-song release “Lost at Sea.” It is artful without being arty. It is mellow without being soft. It is melodic without being saccharine. “Lost at Sea” is delicious the way thoughtful music should be."
-Paul, Score Music Magazine

"I can't believe that I haven't heard of this band and their music before now. Get Lost at Sea and spread the word about this great band to all of your friends."
-C.W. Ross, Indie Music Stop

"This is what Death Cab’s last album should have sounded like, but since they missed the boat it seems time to hand the wheel over to Exceptional Edward, who have managed to find their way beautifully in this Sea. "
-Melanie Love, Daily Vault Music

"It should take you no more than 60 seconds before you realize just how good this is, and by then it is about time you do yourself a favor and purchase their album."
-Lars-Christian, Silent Soundwaves

"It's a success for a talented band and a treat for listeners who've gotten only occasional bits of well-crafted, lyrical odes and catchy riffs that draw from slick, delicate indie outfits like Death Cab for Cutie."
-John Ross, Columbus Alive
