THE PEACE LEECHES
The Peace Leeches formed in Blenheim, Ontario in February 2006. This trippy/electronica/experimental duo is a young fresh act. Both members being multi-instrumentalists adds to the depths of possibilities for this band. The Peace Leeches songs contain melodies that linger in your head long after the music has stopped. They have been compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Nico Vega and vocally they’ve been compared to Feist, Bjork and Souxie and the Banchees. Influences in they’re music and performing style were formed by attending all kinds of obscure live shows, such as Gang of Four. Ray as a young child was taken to more live shows by her parents then most people see in a lifetime. In fact Ray’s early exposure to live music was while still in the womb, taking in a Jane’s Addiction Show in Toronto, just days before being born.Corey and Ray met in high school in February 2005. Ray knew of Corey because he was the lead man in a well known school rock band. Corey found out Ray was a musician so he asked her to get some songs together for an Open Mic gig. They had chemistry right from the start and immediately began writing original material together in Corey’s studio which was made easy due to Corey’s natural technical expertise and dedication. They went by the name of “Black Dot Connection†until Ray came up with a drawing of a Peace Leech and decided to adopt it as a band name and a way of life. Corey loved it! Since both members strive for Peace and Love in their everyday life, this name seemed to be one they could run with and it parallels the message in some of their lyrics, “Heard you saw a man the other day, looked at him in a better way, you didn’t put him down.†(Donate, The Peace Leeches EP, 2007)
The Peace Leeches have managed to captured a formula that combines experimental with catchy and it really works. The experimental aspect of The Peace Leeches is derived from Corey stretching the parameters through an arrangement of effects, paying special attention to tone, creating original material that would be difficult to duplicate. Ray comes up with the catchy melodies and lyrics which makes it obvious that there is an old soul living within this 18 year old girl who writes lyrics far beyond her years, “All the freak show paranoids, are cowering in backstreets. And all the Cyclops prostitutes are scavaging for fresh meat. They are spraying them with raid, because they know that they’re all incest. The doctors complain, it’s releasing Human Excess.†(EXS, The Peace Leeches)
You may own the CD and listen to it repeatedly but it’s not till you’ve seen their live show that you really experience the intensity and power of The Peace Leeches. It has been described as dynamic and mesmerizing. In early 2008 they took the title of the battle of the bands, as voted by the audience. They later opened up for the well known, Canadian band, Gob. With standout tracks like “Donateâ€, captivating live shows, and such fresh, young musicians, The Peace Leeches can count on lots of future success.
