Some things are just meant to be.and for Dr.J thats exactly how it is. It started out as an innocent love of good music not ever imagining that record collecting could lead to this; because for this DJ/producer the musical experience involves many different influences and styles, new and old. A fusion of jazz, latin, funk, house, afrobeat, hip-hop, techno, disco, boogie, r&b and soul are all essentials to a Dr.J DJ set. This eclectic approach has also contributed to his appeal, allowing him the opportunity to share needles with and support some of the worlds most sought after acts including Jazzanova, DJ Heather, ?uestlove, Recloose, Alex Patterson of The Orb, Gotan Project, Zero 7, Meshell Ndegeocello and Matthew Herbert.Its a really simple formula; taking soulful songs from various genres ensures quality music all night long. This was also the basis for the long running Saturday club night at the now defunct Chameleon Urban LoungeJAZIDUP (Straight No Chaser Global HotSpot). One of the first clubnights in Vancouver to feature live jazz musicans playing alongside DJs and a place to catch globetrotting, trendsetting DJs and artists including Ivana Santilli, King Britt, Phil Asher aka Restless Soul, Rich Medina, Capitol A and Afronaught.Now as part of the Pacific Northwests Suntzu Sound Collective, his time is consumed by the recording studio and his latest live project 1LUV. With some help from Vancouvers finest musicians and performers, Dr. J, has now transformed his trademark vibe into an 8-piece LIVE cosmic soulestra . It is a natural progression for this DIY artist, whose sound is drenched in organic soul and percussive modern beats. Influenced by the mastersStevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, Prince, Fela and by the newcomersBugz In The Attic, IG Culture, J-Dilla, Masters At Work; he has armed himself with his own arsenal of musical bombs and is poised and ready because this is exactly where he is meant to be.
