KAVISHA MAZZELLA
I was born in London, England to an Italian Father, Gianni from the island of Ischia near Naples and my mother Anne is Anglo-Burmese born in Shwebo, the home of the giant pagoda in in Burma(now Myanmar). We migrated by ship to Australia in the 60's.I grew up in a house of different musics, languages and foods- Asian,English and Medierranean!I think that impressed on me the possibilities of many cultures living side by side in harmony (and sometimes not!) but on the whole enjoying each others richness. I think this is why I have been drawn to make the kind of music that I do! I am a musician and singer who likes to cross musical boundaries and create community experiences in my shows.Together with fellow musicians Irini Vela and Peter Vadiveloo,we makes passionate, life-affirming music which is an energetic fusion of Italian folk traditions with Country, Celtic, Gypsy and folk and original music .
I don't believe in World Music ... It's just music!!!Music unites us and forcing people into categories divides people along ridiculous ethnic and social lines that are simply imaginary
I prefer to forge my own path in my performance whether it's traditional music, storytelling or a new song that moves between styles and cultures,I want to go on a soulful and humanising journey to the heart and when we play we have alot of fun doing it.
I have been playing music festivals in Australia and overseas starting with the likes of the Stables Folk Club started by the Hastings Family and "Rich & n Famous" musicians John Reed,Lee Buddle,Rueben Kooperman,Gary Burke and Peter Grayling in Fremantle West Australia in the late 80's
I have collaborated with musicians from many cultures including Aboriginal artist Richard Frankland, Canadian James Keelaghan,Kurdish singer Dursan Acar,Greek Musician Irini Vela,South African Singers Vusi Mahlasela and Vulunga Khosa, Sudanese singer Ajak Kwai, Australian folkrock singer -songwriter Mick Thomas to create songs for the ABC website on Peter Pinney called "DUST",jazz musicians trumpeter Gianni Marinucci and Drummer Ronny Ferella and Gonebanda and La Voce Della Luna Italian Women's Choir and Alex Pertout Chilean percussionist and many others
I have been a guest vocal tutor at Victorian College Of The Arts and Musical Director of Melbourne's vivacious Italian Women's choir " La Voce Della Luna" for the last 13 years.I have given workshops in Australia and Italy in voice including Italian folk song.My last cd "Silver Hook Tango "recorded in 2004 is out through Blackmarket Music in Australia.
These days, I have the pleasure of playing my music with some wonderful musicians. Peter Vadiveloo plays percussion and ARIA award winning composer and musician Irini Vela plays Bazouki, Mandolin and guitar.I am fortunate to have such simpatico players working with me!We perform at festivals around the country."Kavisha sings with the voice of a heartbroken angel"

Influences: ..The Guest HouseThis being human is a guest house. Every morning, a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.-- Jalahuddin Rumi
