Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

About Me

(Disclaimer) First and foremost this website is not intended as a serious one. It is mainly devoted to the many different historical figures and character roles that I act in or have acted in at various Historical Reenactments and Medieval Fairs or Renaissance Festivals. The primary one here is a character I play at the (MRF) Minnesota Renaissance Festival. He is one of “The Privateers” known as “Mister Spitt (That’s me as “Spitt” making “The Face” and also in the “Looking for the shoe-shine boy” picture). Therefore, many of my posts, bulletins, blogs, etc. are between me, speaking in that character, and the other members of Morgan’s crew, and should be taken as such. When I post things in “pirate format” it is a form of method acting. I am immersing myself in the part and role-playing my character for practice, along with the other actors’ characters, which are doing the same thing. That being said, if something I post offends you, first ask yourself, “Does it look like I am speaking in pirate dialect to you?” If I am using words like “Yarr, Arrgh, Avast, Matey, and Bugger!” then I’m probably just acting my part and you should be no more offended than if you had paid $15-20 to go see me and my fellow Brethren of the Coast at some show. “Yarr, in fact, you should thanks us for the free… Arrgh! Bugger!” See? Now if it amuses you in some way and you find it falls somewhere between mildly humerous or OMGIROTFLMFAO funny, then please feel free to post a comment, give me kudos, e-mail me, blog about it, or send me a message by carrier pigeon. I love feedback. I may not always like what you say, but I will respect you for having the guts to say it to my face, and defend your right to say it to the death. Now that’s me being all serious, with patriotic martial music by John Phillips Sousa playing in the background, fireworks exploding, flags waving and stuff like that. See the difference? Now that that is out of the way, for those of you who do not know me as “Mister Spitt,” he is currently my primary alter ego at the MRF. Mister Spitt is the Boatswain of Admiral Morgan's Flagship “The Revenge.” He is one of the most feared members of Morgan’s crew, and on a ship full of cowards that’s not much of an accolade. When he’s not administering discipline to the crew, Spitt enjoys drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, singing bawdy off-watch songs, and writing bad real pirate poetry. He is making preparations to combine his three great loves in a writing project that he expects will take several years of intensive field research and testing. He will be inventing new lyrics to that famous real pirate song, “What would you do with a drunken sailor?”Some, but not all of the other characters I play or have played include: “Anarvid Pending, a shield bearer for the Baron of House Blackmoor from the Barony of Nordskogen (Society for Creative Anachronism – Minneapolis, MN) and former Seneschal and Chirurgin of the Shire of Rivenwood Tower (SCA – Mankato, MN),” “Pierre Cardin, a member of the 'Thieves Guild' and one of the 'Stupid Bandits' at MRF – posing as traveling French Botanists,” “SGM Sir Duncan MacDougall of MacDougall, Earl of Sutherland, Lord of Lorne, Knight of the Most Royal Order of the Garter, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Commander-in-Chief in and over His Majesty's Western Scottish Fleet and its Dependencies, Vice Admiral of the same, Sergeant Major of Colonel Gaffney’s Regiment of Foot, &c &c &c…” a noble Scottish Lord at the MRF who has collected lots of titles from working his way up through both the military ranks (In Clann Tartan) and within the MRF social hierarchy up to becoming a member of the Royal Court (The picture of me in my infamous Yellow Outfit after being Knighted into the Garter), and “Lord James Stuart, Duke of Rothesay” (at the short-lived Rosenthorne Renaissance Fair).I have worked and volunteered for many different Living History/Educational Theatre organizations to teach history, and I continue to do so in my spare time. I like to maintain contact with these individuals and organizations and network between the different people, groups and sites that I interact with on a regular basis. For that reason, this website is also dedicated to those different living history personas I portray or have portrayed at various historical re-enactments or living history educational fairs and events around the United States and Canada. These include such personalities as: “Pierre De La Quoi, Hivernant et Guide de La Compagnie De Les Hivernants Du La Rive Saint Pierre, (1740-1840),” “Private/Corporal/Sergeant/Leftennant Duncan MacDougall of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, French & Indian War, (1758-1763), the picture of me in the fancy Red Coat is my officer’s uniform for the 42nd,” “Duncan MacDougall, Boatswain of the Northwest Company’s schooner Perseverance from the Naval Brigade at Historic Old Fort William during the 1820's Fur Trade Era,” “Duncan MacDougall, Seaman aboard the schooner HMS Nancy, War of 1812,” “Lucky Pierre, a member of the Mississippi Volunteers, War of 1812,” and many other characters at different Fur Trade Era (1650-1840) Rendezvous, Historical Re-enactments and Historic Sites, such as Canada’s Historic Old Fort William in Thunder Bay Ontario, the US Park Service’s Grand Portage National Monument and the Minnesota Historical Society’s Historic Fort Snelling (1820’s – 1830’s) and the (1805-1806) Fur Trade Post at Pine City. Finally, I want to remain in contact with my friends, family, co-workers and former classmates. This further serves to blur the lines of distinction between my characterizations and my real life communications. As Morgan is fond of saying, “Blimy, if they wants us to pay attention to these ‘lines’ they shouldn’t makes them so small or grey – they should be BIG WIDE things with flashing lights and warning sirens that shout ‘Don’t go over there!’ whenever you gets close to them! Bugger!”From time to time I may post some official looking pictures of me in different modern uniforms. By way of explanation for my more liberal friends I offer the following two quotes. As the Greek historian and martial philosopher Thucydides wrote in his record of the Peloponnesian Wars, "That [state] which separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards, and its fighting done by fools," and as George Orwell once remarked, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf…"I wish you all a peace-full night's sleep and day to follow!

I Am A: Lawful Good Elf Ranger Paladin
Alignment:
Lawful Good characters are the epitome of all that is just and good. They believe in order and governments that work for the benefit of all, and generally do not mind doing direct work to further their beliefs.
Race:
Elves are the eldest of all races, although they are generally a bit smaller than humans. They are generally well-cultured, artistic, easy-going, and because of their long lives, unconcerned with day-to-day activities that other races frequently concern themselves with. Elves are, effectively, immortal, although they can be killed. After a thousand years or so, they simply pass on to the next plane of existance.
Primary Class:
Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.
Secondary Class:
Paladins are the Holy Warriors. They have been chosen by a God/dess to be their representative on Earth, and must follow the code of that deity, or risk severe penalties. They tend towards being righteous, but not generally to excess.
Deity:
Mielikki is the Neutral Good goddess of the forest and autumn. She is also known as the Lady of the Forest, and is the Patron of Rangers. Her followers are devoted to nature, and believe in the positive and outreaching elements of it. They use light armor, and a variety of weapons suitable for hunting, which they are quite skilled at. Mielikki's symbol is a unicorn head.
