About Capoeira:Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that blends elements of music, self defense techniques, acrobatics dance, and tradition. It was created by black slaves in Brazil in the 16th century as a way to resist oppression and fight for freedom. Capoeira is a Jogo (a game), a ritualize combat in which two Capoeiristas enter the roda (Circle) and exchange movements of attack and defense in constant flow to the rhythm of the music. The Capoeira program begins with a combination of basic exercises and stretches, helping the beginner to develop flexibility, strength and power. The next step is to master the main move in Capoeira called “Ginga†in a side to side motion that gives the student a physical base from which students exert attack counter attack and escapes. Then the application of techniques in partners helps them understand how to apply all moves and combinations learned in the “rodaâ€, the circles around the game is played, following the instruments and its different toques. There are three styles that we practice in Capoeira:Capoeira de Angola: Is the mother of Capoeira. Is where all the malice of the game came from using “Mandinga†which literally means trickery. Also, students learn how to gain control over your body with slow contained movements, and combinations of attack, counter attack and escape techniques.Benguela: Is a kind of game that requires more concentration, moves are bit more vigorous. The player most balance his body and learn to move up or down in proper timing, benguela is a closed game, so acrobatic moves are not used, these could be a disadvantage for the playerRegional: is a newer form of Capoeira. Regional was developed by Mestre Bimba to make capoeira more mainstream and accessible to the public, and less associated with the criminal elements of Brazil. The regional style is most often composed of fast and athletic play. All of these styles are differentiated by the rhythm of the berimbau, the instruments command the roda, indicate which kind of game the players should play. Some benefits of training Capoeira:Physical• Intense cardiovascular workout. • Improves flexibility, posture and balance. • Development of rhythm and coordination. • Maximizes endurance. • Improve muscle strength and speed. • Increase lung function and aerobic capacity.Intellectual• Learn Portuguese language. • General Afro-Brazilian traditions. • Music skills (Playing instruments and singing).Psychological• Reduces stress. • Improves general well being. • Improves focus and concentration. • Encourages Assertiveness and self confidence. • Promotes self control, discipline and commitment.Social• Integrates a sense of family • Promote togetherness. • Celebrates diversity. • Promotes empathy and support within the group.KidsCapoeira is an excellent way to keep your child active, and healthy.
