About Me

born: January 28th, 1969, Amsterdam education: Amsterdam Conservatory specialization: Jazz music; Contemporary music through non-western techniques, taught by Rafael Reina.
As a musician I am always seeking the essence of music, the experience of the moment, a connection between worlds of perception and the potential of my play. I love contradiction: improvisation and composition, abstraction and lyricism, rawness and refinement, silence and rowdiness, order and chaos. My interests are tone, virtuosity, and a continuous pursuit of perfect motion.
As a composer the creation of clear and simple yet concept-rich material is my main pursuit. I leave plenty of room for improvisation and interpretation and explore the playfulness and playability of more complex rhythms.Powerfull melodies and lyricism play an important role in my work.
What the press is saying:
“Esmée is an expressive alt with a sound like liquid gold. Her play is lyrical, expressive, unorthodox, and all her own.”
As a teacher I am very interested in the person behind the instrument. In my workshops I emphasize the development of a musician’s individuality. I use the participant’s motivation and prior experience as a starting point. The teaching-methods I use are: improvisation, the COBRA-method, basic techniques for jazz music and last but not least: music that I am involved in and inspired by at the moment.

Band Members: Tetzepi
In 1997 the Tezepi bigtet was founded, in cooperation with Hans Leeuw. A fifteen piece strong band that has earned its own place in the jazz, improvisation, and contemporary music scene. Tetzepi means a time before time perceived: a time before dogma and tested methodology. The band members as well as talented, avant-garde composers — foreign and domestic alike — write for the band, and in doing so demonstrate their vision of groundbreaking music. Tezepi has released three CD’s on the Amsterdam-based Try Tone label.

Olthuis & Van Veenendaal
Two renowned and distinctive Dutch musicians bring years of experience and a talent for improvisation together in playing their own contemporary work, defined by powerful melodies, subtlety, stirring grooves, improvisation and loads of energy. A small band with a big sound.

The band has released its second CD, Stripes & Spikes & Strikes. This rock-solid album enabled the band to stake out its own turf in the jazz, improv, and contemporary composed music scene. A passionate statement in an era of superficiality, but of course taking risks is an essential ingredient in the blend that makes convincing music.

This new quartet plays compositions by Esmée Olthuis. Rhythmic music with a melodious thread running through it. The band knows no hierarchy, so the diverse musicians have a suitable platform to express their personal attitudes. Colorful and playful material played by vibrant musicians.
