About Me

Formed as The New World Trio in the late 60's in Brisbane, Australia, and armed with a recording contract with Albert Productions, John Kane, John Lee, and Mel Noonan first hit the local charts at the end of 1968 with their version of Try To Remember.
Buoyed by this success the trio travelled to England in early 1971 and began working the club circuit. This led to an appearance on the UK talent quest show Opportunity Knocks where they became popular winners.
The trio, now billed simply as New World, signed with producer Mickie Most to his fledgling RAK Records label, whose roster at the time included Hot Chocolate, CCS. and a solo Peter Noone (ex-Herman's Hermits). They released a version of the Joe South song Rose Garden, beating the Lynn Anderson international hit version in the UK.
Their next single was "Kara Kara" (UK 17, Dec. 1971). In May they released their biggest selling record, "Sister Jane", which was a Top 10 hit in Britain (9, May 1972) and Top 20 in Australia (16, Aug. 1972).

The original version of Chinn and Chapman's "Living Next Door To Alice". Demonstrating the fickle nature of pop succes, New World's version failed to chart at all in the UK, despite four previous Top 40 hits -- although it did make the lower end of the Australian Top 40 in , reaching 35 in March 1973. Ironically, the same song became a UK Top 5 hit for Smokie in 1976.
"Alice" was the first of three New World singles released on the RAK label. Their next release, "Rooftop Singing" just missed out on the UK Top 50, only getting as high as 51.
New World also recorded an LP for RAK, Believe In Music, initially released in the UK only in 1973. Their final RAK single, the sentimental favourite "Old Shep" released(1974),
New World then switched to EMI label, for whom the recorded two more singles, "Do It Again" and "Sweet Dream", both released in 1974.
