New Edition was the brain child of Bobby Brown. In 1978 along with Michael Bivins and Ricardo Bell New Edition was born. Later on Ralph Tresvant and Ronald DeVoe joined. The group performed at local talent shows in Boston until they were discovered by a music producer named Maurice Starr. The group received a record contract with Streetwise Records. Other hits (Is this the End, Popcorn Love, and Jealous Girl) followed. In 1984 after a bitter dispute with management and production, New Edition signed with a larger Record company named MCA. Here is where New Edition got the exposure they were seeking. Their first hit on the new label was entitled Cool It Now. This song reached #1 status also. The album was dropped in the fall of 1984 entitled New Edition. This album produced the hits Mr. Telephone Man (#1 on the R&B charts), Lost in Love, and My Secret. In 1985 receiving pressure from their managers and producers, Ronnie, Ricky, Ralph, and Mike was forced to vote childhood friend Bobby out of the group, but not before recording the album All For Love with the hit Count Me Out. From NE toured as a quartet. Bobby was still busy working on his solo projects. In 1986 He dropped his solo album King of Stage with the #1 hit Girlfriend. Things were slow for NE and Bobby Brown in 1987. Ronnie, Ricky, and Mike thought Ralph was ready to break away for a solo career. With this thought they brought in singer Johnny Gill who started recording in 1984 with Stacey Lattisaw. He was in the process of working on a solo album when the call came in. Ralph didn't like the fact that they brought Johnny in. He wanted to leave the fifth spot open for his best friend Bobby. Little did he know that Bobby was about to explode. Johnny joined as the fifth member and from here the platinum album Heart Break was recorded. The first hit If it isn't Love reached #2 on the charts in the spring of 1988. The only reason it didn't reach #1 was because Bobby had it sewed up with his hit Don't Be Cruel. With the sucess of both projects New Edition hit the road on the Heart Break tour with Bobby as their opening act. Both acts controled the charts in 1988 and 1989 with hit after hit. Bobby's Don't Be Cruel album produced three #1 hits and two more top ten hits. New Edition hit #1 with Can You Stand the Rain. After the Heart Break tour, Ralph decided to take a stab at being a solo act. Johnny returned to his project he was working .. joining NE. Ronnie, Ricky, and Mike formed the multi platinum group Bell Biv DeVoe. bell biv devoe - poison

They produced hits but not like the previous albums. In 1996 New Edition took the world by storm by announcing that all six members were returning for the long awaited New Edition Reunion. The album was entitled Home Again. Unlike earlier recordings, Ralph did not receive most of the leads. It was broken up amongst the members. Home Again reached double platinum. Hit Me Off was the first single and went to #1. They had three other hits off this album. The tour was what the fans was waiting for. But egos led to the tour breaking apart. Bobby left early and released his album Forever. Johnny had released his album, Let's Get the Mood Right during the Home Again tour. In the fall of 1997 Johnny joined with Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert and formed the group LSG. Things was quiet out of the other members of the group.
