PHUCK, IT'S LEPHRENIC!

About Me

Leigh Hegg, a.k.a. Lephrenic, initially entered the music world as a drummer, studying with Dave Sanders at Lismore's Southern Cross University. Along with his fellow music student friends, he helped found the instrumental group Plankton. Blending electronic production, composition and improvisation, Plankton's music drew on elements of jazz, fusion, trip hop, ambient and the post-rock styles of Tortoise and Do Make Say Think.
After relocating to Melbourne in 2002, Plankton performed live at such venues as Bar Open, Rob Roy and The Planet. Plankton appeared on PBS and RRR fm for live to air performances and interviews to promote Plankton's albums 'The Undertone' (2003) and 'Insomnia' (2005). Plankton finally called it a day in 2006 but remains among its members' proudest achievements.
Since 2000, Leigh has taken an interest in making electronic music. At first under the name Grievous, he produced remixes of Plankton and Underlapper for Sydney indie label Feral Media and contributed drums for the Alpen album, 'Overdub' (2005). Now known as Lephrenic, Leigh has since completed a remix for Comatone 's next release, as well as writing tunes of his own. He has also held down a monthly DJ night known as Off Beat at Workshop and now Horse Bazaar.
Now a full fledged member of Melbourne band White Minus Red , the group provides Lephrenic with the dual role of drummer and laptop performer, able to bring instrumental and electronic ideas to the mix.

Drum & Bass is undoubtedly a major influence for me. Producers I'm digging at the moment are Fanu, Seba and Paradox, Macc, Fracture & Neptune, Nebula, Equinox, Klute, Photek, Source Direct, Breakage, Amit, old London Elektricity and Calibre.

For Hip Hop and funky shizz, DJ Shadow, Vadim and Krush, Handsome Boy Modelling School, Sixtoo, Sage Francis, Ty, Saul Williams, Herbaliser, Blackalicious, Ozomatli, The Meters, James Brown, Fela Kuti, Medeski Martin and Wood, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Jean Luc Ponty, Frank Zappa.

Also a big fan of contemporary composers - Steve Reich, Gyorgy Ligeti, Gavin Bryars, John Adams, Alexander Balanescu, Michael Nyman, Arvo Part, Philip Glass, Robert Davidson/Topology, Kronos Quartet.

And I must give props to the Aussie sounds - Prop, Coda, Triosk, Pivot, Gauche, Hermitude, Qua, Jake Savona/Rootbound System, Velure, Curse Ov Dialekt, Ben Frost, B(if)tek, Mieli, Comatone, Pretty Boy Crossover, FourPlay, The Dirty Three, Anubis Complex, Music vs Physics, Good Buddha, The Necks, Telemetry Orchestra. All are an influence on me by making beautiful music in Australia without adhering to 'genre' or playing it safe.
Sounds Like: Drum edits to trip you over and melodies to make you cry. Listen to the tunes I've posted here and you'll know what I mean.
Where I can, I like to incorporate ideas or methods from any of the artists listed above in my Influences.

Anything goes. Music is music.
