The Thirsties bring the real deal in indie rock--powerful guitar-driven quality with subtle brilliance musically and lyrically...—Eric Ward, Free Times
Ugly is the New Handsome Review
"Another band with veritable “Who’s Who in Columbia†lineup...The Thirsties hearken back to the days when college radio was dominated by R.E.M. and the Replacements. Ugly is the New Handsome is a flat-out rock record...there aren’t any ballads or dance numbers to distract from the tasty guitar licks and outstanding vocals."—Patrick Wall, Free Times
These five Columbia, SC indie-rock scene vets write songs that showcase their love for vintage tones and multi- instrumentation. The band’s sound has been described as drawing on influences ranging from Guided by Voices, R.E.M. and The Replacements to Swervedriver and Archers of Loaf—Flagpole, Athens, Ga.
Fake EP Review
The Thirsties debut, Ugly is the New Handsome, found them doing what they do best: Churning out terse, melodic college-rock anthems that recalled the heydays of The Replacements, R.E.M. and Guided by Voices. So you’ll forgive The Thirsties if they step out of their comfort zone—if only slightly—on the Fake EP. “Gasoline†harkens back to Ugly with its insistent, stop-start guitar patterns and singalong chorus, but it’s when The Thirsties branch out into spacier territory, as on “Fake†and “Loudâ€, that the Fake EP shines. Here’s to hoping The Thirsties follow this trend on their upcoming, to-be-released-later-this-year follow-up EP.—Patrick Wall, Free Times
