Marilyn was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st, 1926 in Los Angelas. Her mother had mental health problems, resulting in young Norma Jeane to live in and out of foster homes. In 1933, she lived briefly with her mother until 1934, when her mother began showing signs of mental depression. Grace McKee, a close friend of Norma's mother, took care of her. Because of financial issues, Norma Jeane lived in an orphanage. Later on, Norma lived with some of Grace's relatives. In 1941, Norma Jeane was again living with Grace, when she met her neighbour Jim Dougherty. Grace and her husband moved to the east coast and Norma Jeane married Jim in June of 1942. Norma's husband joined the Merchant Marines and was sent overseas in 1944. Norma Jeane was photographed by the Army as a promotion to show women contributing to war efforts. She had been recognized by David Conover, and by spring of 1945, she had already appeared on 33 national magazine covers. In 1946, Norma and Jim divorced and she started calling herself Marilyn Monroe.
