About Me

No Blood Orphan "Your First Is Your Last"
'Your First is Your Last' is a record of confessional pop songs, sophisticated in it's progressive-artful melody. It reminds me of the first time (at 15?) I sat in an empty room and obsessively listened to a certain pop record straight through, over and over. Every song on it has an unfurling set of melodic hooks that take unusually rewarding turns. The songs lurch and slither into the stereo field with intelligently accented drums and interweaving tightly reverberated guitars. They are then swelled fat with hammond organ, piano and bass. The vocal takes have the urgency of early Dylan or Robert Smith. There is melody building upon melody and a gently spacious atmosphere wheezing just underneath. The whole record is masterfully arranged taking bits from the psychedelic era, early 1980's pop (ala Smiths, Magazine), slide blues, and a 21st century cynicism, all woven together into an compelling wall of sound. If Phil Spector weren't in jail he'd probably take notes.
