In an age of House, Trance, Emo, high school anthems and auto-tuned R&B...Rob Ronner is a breath of fresh air. A musician since age eleven, Rob started his musical path on the drums, following in his older brother's footsteps. At age 14, during a trip to western Virginia to visit his mother's family, Rob witnessed the soul stirring power of a room full of guitars and banjos and group of people having the time of their lives in a mountaintop living room. He went out the next day and bought a guitar. He picked up a few pointers from his Virginia family and returned home to his native Wilmington, NC and he hasn't put down the guitar since. Over the next decade and a half Rob has developed a proficiency on a variety of instruments including bass guitar, piano, organ, and banjo, all the while never ceasing to expand his knowledge and grasp of his first three loves, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and of course...the drums. At age 25, after ten years of free performances and open mic nights, Rob started playing professionally and has since released two albums that span the charts from rock, soul, funk, bluegrass, blues and acoustic. The first, "All In Time", was primarily a funky introspective acoustic album with songs inspired from a variety of relationships and travels. Besides outsourcing drum duties to a good friend, Rob played all of the instruments on his first disc. The bi-lingual Ronner composed some of the material in English as well as Spanish. A track from the "All In Time" album entitled "Magico Amor", won third place in the independent music awards in 2006. His second album was a southern rock inspired venture with his last brainchild group, "The New Nation". Recorded by Sean MacPhearson at East Atlanta Studios, the New Nation's output falls into a line that could best be described as crunchy southern poetry. Several songs from "The New Nation" self-titled release were featured on an east coast compilation CD entitled "Helping Hands". Rob's solo material has been featured on another compilation CD entitled "Chill Out" East Coast Ed. Volume 3, released by Quickstar Productions of Maryland.
In his solo career as well as with the band, Rob has been featured in regional magazines such as "Avenue", "Encore", and "Focus on the Coast", and has also made regular appearances on local radio programs around the Wilmington area. He has also done numerous charity concerts, appearing at a different venue consecutively over the past three years for Wilmington's annual "Rock Against Rape." In the past five years he has opened for an impressive variety of up and coming acts as well as seasoned music industry veterans like Joe Bonamassa, Eric Lindell, Tishamingo, and late Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Wellnick."The New Nation" disbanded in early 2008 and in the meantime Rob has been preparing material for his second solo release which he is now recording at his Wilmington home. He has yet to title the new album but it is due for release by the New Year. He is currently playing clubs all over Wilmington as he has done for the past five years. When asked how he would best describe his music Rob had this to say, "All the songs reflect a central perception of life, love, loss, government, sex and self-destruction, all things with which I am beautifully and painfully familiar".Check out www.robronner.com for a complete list of where he'll be month to month.
