SKATE OR DIE Punk n. 1. A youth movement of the late 70's characterized by anti-establishment slogans and outrageous vlothes and hairstyles. 2. An inferior, rotten or worthless person or thing. 3. Worthless articles collectively. 4. Short for punk rock. 5. Obs. A young male homosexual; cat. 6. A prostitute - adj. 7. Rotten or Worthless. Punk music was always more than a T-shirt or a peice of loud music: it was an irrespressible attitude. It is this attitude that momentarily rescued the world form its time-honoured place of shame and elavated it to describe a youth movement that dared to rock the status quo beyond the imagination of any previos generation. "Too fast to live, too young to die." punk started on two different fronts: England and New York. The American's, for the most part, started the punk movement. 1975 was when punk, as a visible entity, was galvanized into being. Most of its roots before that had ties to art and particular artist such as Warhol William S. Burroughs (writer, i know but fuck of, very important), and Gustave Courbet, who both spearheaded the movement (Avant-Garde) which celebrated the common man and his struggles. Warhol's Factory (a studio made up of gay, straight lesbian, tranvestite artists) was, for lack of a better term, the birthplace of punk. TheVelvet Underground, New York Dolls etc. took influence from this movement and helped mold punk bands to come. The New York Dolls broke up in 1975. However, these two bands helped influence an entire generatin of music not just punk: from Jim Morrison to Malcolm McLaren who would lay the groudn work for the Sex Pistols. In New York, bands such as MC5, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, The stooges, Johnny Thunders etc. began to mold punk. And with the formation of punk it's anti-establishment attitude also took shape. Punk artists wrote about real experiences: sex, drugs, politics etc. Drugs were also very common in the punk scene, "Wayne Kramer of MC5 was caught in possession of 6 ounces of 88% cocaine in 75' and practically missed the entire movement." "There are things i don't remember. I used to reach blackout point really easily and still be walking around. I'd wake up with bumps on my head, a kneedle in my arm, blood on my shirt and green coming out of my penis." - Iggy pop. In England, Malcolm McLaren set out to puppet the English equivalent of the New York Dolls. Together, McLaren and a designer Vivian Westwood began various shops in London, (the most famous of which being Sex) would help mold the fashion of punk. The crowd whofrequented the shop, which specialized in bondage, leather, and tattered clothing, took the American Punk Movement to heart and the music followed. McLaren began to gather the group which would later be known as the Sex Pistols. The original line-up was: Glen Matlock, Johnny Rotten, Paul Cook, and Steve Jones. As most peopel know, Sid Vicious took Glen's spot as bassist. And together they set out to outrage the population. Various other bands such as the Clash also led this movement. However by the late seventies most of the drug induced sex driven revolution had ended. Punk was never ab out big stadiums it was a club thing. Nowadays, spike belts, band t-shirts, tight pants, and "wild" hair means your punk. The movement and meanign has all but died. Punk shouldn't be mistaken for the shit your channeled today, try and look beyond it. I know i didnt go indpet but i tried i just got tired of typing. sorry. There's alot more details and stories and tragedies but hey look them up yourslef.
