Evgeni Malkin arrived in the NHL with much fanfare and certainly did not disappoint.
The 20-year-old Russian overcame language and culture barriers as well as a separated shoulder in training camp to lead all rookies in scoring with 85 points (33+52) in 78 games for the Penguins. He became the second Penguins player to capture the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year. Mario Lemieux won it in 1985.Malkin’s 16 power-play goals tied a Penguins rookie record that was set by Sidney Crosby last season.Malkin has been a clutch performer for the Penguins as 25 of his 33 goals came while the Penguins trailed or the game was tied. Eight of his goals have been scored in the final five minutes of games this season. He began his NHL career in style. He became the first rookie in the league’s modern era to score at least one goal in his first six games. Before Malkin, only three players in NHL history had scored at least one goal in each of their first six (or more) games and all did so in 1917-18, the NHL’s inaugural season. Montreal’s Joe Malone, Ottawa’s Cy Denneny and Montreal’s Newsy Lalonde tallied goals their first 14, 12 and eight games, respectively.Malkin joined Sidney Crosby (age 19) and Jordan Staal (18) to give the Penguins three players under the age of 21 to score 20 or more goals this season for the Penguins. The last team to have three players score 20+ goals in the same season before their 21st birthday was Edmonton in 1981-82 (Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey).Gretzky and Messier both turned 21 years old in January that season but they each reached the 20-goal mark before their 21st birthday. Coffey did not turn 21 until after the season ended.Malkin and Crosby both scored at least 10 goals through November. The only other teammates under the age of 21 to achieve this were Wayne Gretzky (31), Mark Messier (17) and Paul Coffey (14) in 1981 for the Edmonton Oilers.Malkin recorded a 14-game home scoring streak (5+16) in 2006-07. It is the longest such streak by a rookie on any team since Teemu Selanne had a pair of 13-game home point streaks for Winnipeg in 1992-93.The young Russian finished second in team scoring to Crosby. Malkin is also the first Penguins rookie to win the NHL’s rookie scoring title since Mario Lemieux did it in 1984-85.He was selected to play for Russia at the IIHF World Championship tournament in Moscow. Malkin racked up 10 points (5+5) in nine games for the Russians, who claimed the bronze medal. He was named to the All-Tournament team, as selected by the media.2005-06: Widely regarded as the best player not in the NHL in 2005-06, Evgeni Malkin led Metallurg Magnitogorsk to the 2005-06 Russian Super League regular-season championship. The team scored the most goals in the league (175) and gave up the least (75), which set a league record. In addition, the team’s 29-point margin in the standings over second-place AK Bars Kazan established a new league standard.
.. -- -- -- -- -- --[endif]--Malkin finished third in league scoring with 47 points (21+26) despite missing five games to play for Russia at the World Junior Championship. Only 19, he finished second in the league in goals and third in assists. He added 46 penalty minutes as well. He collected 15 points (5+10) and 42 penalty minutes in 11 Russian Super League playoff games.Malkin shined on the international level.
