The transition to Junior Guevarra wasn’t just about a name change, it seemed to fit with the way things were going, maturity has now moved in and settling in quite nicely thankyou. It’s been a Journey, starting from humble beginnings in his native Philippines where he stared adversity right in the eyes and overcame the obvious barriers, ‘Asian boys are not Pop Superstars’, well, not just yet anyway……Evidently ‘JJ’ is now just a moniker, and a sly nod to the past, priorities have set in and most importantly the songs have grown, not in that ‘organic’ way which is bestowed upon many new artists but in a natural way, one that is attributed to a musician that is no longer a boy but a fully fledged singer songwriter, albeit at the age of 22In truth, however, Junior Guevarra is still an individual who makes up his own rules and carves his own niche when song-writing and recording. On the live scene, Guevarra is very much at home playing with full band as he is individually, adding texture to the songs without swamping the fragile emotional threads of the lyrics. It’s a difficult trick to pull off, but one which he manages effortlessly. He’s also managed to combine deft finger work and cunning percussion at the same time, another cheeky wink to one of his peers, Raul MidonUnashamedly, there are flavours of an early Prince, however if you combine the beautiful soul of Donny Hathaway, the presence of Al Green and a touch of Santana, then you’re on the right track.(Jacksbedroom 2007)
