I'm a Muslim of British Bangladeshi origin who believes that sacrifice is the key to self improvement. That's not to say you strap a bomb to yourself and blow yourself up- Islam does not permit this. Rather sacrifice one's own needs and desires for that of your fellow human being, be they be black or white, African or an American, Muslim or non-Muslim- if everyone followed this tenet it would not only improve them but also lead to a more cohesive society. In the Qur'aan it says: "What is the reward of good except good"(ch.55-v.60)- so put others needs before your own and do good by people. Remember without being a good person you cannot be a good Muslim.
