Summer 2005: Out of their common passion for extreme music, former Underage guitarist Xtyr and his friends Frostmoon and MIB give birth to the metal project The Other Side.
October 2005: Sooth joins the band in quality of bassist and vocalist, but soon after problems concerning the rehearsal schedule and divergent ideas about music lead to the end of the project. Nevertheless Xtyr and Sooth continue the creative process on their own and form a two-men black metal band, infusing their music with elements of the Chinese culture, which immediately become the distinctive trademark of the band: folk melodies, straightforward metal and epic passages. Choosing black metal as their mode of expression, they create a completely new Viking Folk Black Metal band, Martyr!
January 2006: Martyr altogether with a melodic black metal band set up the “Black Metal in Lanzhou City” League (also known as BM36°), with the purpose of sustaining the development and enlarging of the Western China’s black metal scene. Internal reasons and the splitting of the bands result in a temporary phase of standstill for BM36°, ended when the new and promising one-man band Songs Over Ruin joins and brings new life into the League.
February 2006: the band decides to record a one-song demo called National Martyr. The song describes Viking warriors’ bloody battles against their foreign enemies. After being published online, the song received rather positive feedback and the band was given by An Wen from the Qingdao based metal label Martyr Productions the opportunity to discuss the recording of a split and a MCD.
October 2006: Martyr takes part in the Magical Compass website(http://www.ssmc.cn) sponsored spreading activity.
November 2006: Yurlien joins Martyr, in charge of writing part of the lyrics.
January 2007: the website China Rock Youth (http://www.cnrockyouth.com) officially opens the official Martyr discussion forum.
March 2007: Martyr records song of Sword. Recordings take place at Counterpoint Studios, where the band spends two weeks.Inspiration comes from a dream of war. In the wasteland a troop is in battle array, officers and men in their uniforms, the dim sky fiercely torn open by the sun’s blade; the sound of a bugle reverberates through the land, steeds neigh, a thousand armours and shields tinkle…the sounds of the battle are one. It was like standing on the shores of a huge black lake, facing the northern wind that comes back and forth, watching the sun rise and set over an ancient battleground.

Even if Lanzhou is so distant from the culture of Northern Europe, nevertheless the birth of Martyr has already brought new hope to the local Viking/Black Metal scene! As the first true authentic Black Metal band in the city, we believe they will raise – not only in Lanzhou and the Northwest but in the whole country - a brilliant Viking wave!
