Rum and Jewels both grew up in Hartsdale, New York. They are both fluent in Japanese and English, and also have a 80s and 90s influence in their music, giving nods to artists like Naughty by Nature and NOTORIUS B.I.G. The group debuted in December 2001 with their first single, "So Tell Me" (which debuted in the Oricon Top 10). Since the release of their 7th single, "I See You", they have taken up the task of self-producing. Since then, their style has shifted more to a heartwarming pop style than their previous, more urban, sound. Their albums are released on both the espionage and cutting edge labels, both under the avex trax umbrella. To this day, they have 4 albums and 14 singles.
