My name is Marco Barbieri. Salem Rose Music is my new company. Between 1995-2007 I was in charge of all North American activities for Century Media Records (as well as overseeing all domestic affairs for some of those years for Nuclear Blast America, Liquor and Poker Music, Noise, Olympic and more). Before that I spent 5 years (1991-1995) with Metal Blade Records doing A+R and Publicity. (I've got a blog here with bands listed that I've signed at both labels since that seems to be a popular question).
I also started a fanzine in 1988 called No Glam Fags, which later became Ill Literature (a nationally distributed metal mag) that ended in 2001. Alongside that I wrote interviews/reviews for others like Metal Maniacs, Creem, Screamer, Huh, Raygun, Rox, Radioactive, and tons of other zines and regional papers.
In 2007 I decided to move back to Las Vegas to raise our now 6-year old son and for my wife and I to be close to our parents. Thus after 12 years I stepped down from my President's position at Century Media. I phased out over the last year continuing on as a consultant and handling some projects for them.
In the meantime, I have fallen in love with a new, young band called WARBRINGER and we've both decided that I should start managing them. While in college I managed a couple of classic underground thrash bands, Epidemic and The Horde of Torment, and I miss those days and have opted to get involved in the management end of things again.
WARBRINGER's CM debut, War Without End, was released Feb. 5, 2008 (Feb. 25 in Europe/Australia, May 15 in Japan) They have already toured the US four times (Jan/Feb with Exodus, Goatwhore, Arsis and in March/April with Nile, Suicide Silence, The Faceless and Unexpect; Aug/Sept supporting Finntroll and finally in October supporting Overkill), as well as two trips to Europe last summer with Napalm Death/Suffocation, a week of headline UK dates with Gama Bomb in support and a tour with Sworn Enemy and All Shall Perish. The guys just released their second album, Waking Into Nightmares on May 19, produced by Gary Holt (Exodus) and mied by Zack Ohren. The band already spent 4 months in the US with Soilwork, Darkane and Swallow the Sun and then dates with Kreator, Exodus and Belphegor to set-up the release and will be in Europe this summer for 5 weeks, including dates with Testament, Hatebreed and Sacred Reich as well as a dozen large festivals. Do not miss them! Dates and more info available at the band's page www.myspace.com/warbringer
I have also started a music publishing company, under the Salem Rose Music banner, and other than administering the copyrights of the 3 bands I've managed (Warbringer, Epidemic and The Horde of Torment) I am searching for new artists and have done 4 deals, the first with the very promising and hard-working Sacramento area thrash band DEVASTATOR (who just released a fantastic new demo); another with HEXEN, an LA thrash band signed to OSM Records who released their debut album, State of Insurgency, Aug. 8; Long Island, New York's death/grind freaks, REVENANCE and recently Las Vegas thrashmeisters AVENGER OF BLOOD (who have a new song, "Hell Patrol" (produced by me) on Relapse's split 7" series, Speed n' Spikes Vol. 5).
Other areas of development has been consulting bands/labels, producing the new 6-song CD from 13 MILES, doing independent publicity, promoting shows and launching my own label imprint, M-Theory Audio, whose first release is PAPSMEAR's Music to Kill By, a reissue compiling the legendary Vegas thrashers' 2 classic '80s demos, along with tons of extra live tracks and a bonus DVD of 3 live shows from back in the day. www.myspace.com/mtheoryaudio
Despite focusing on a different career path my love for metal and the music business is and will forever be a large part of me. With over 20 years of practical music biz experience and contacts and over 30 as a die-hard fan of the genre I may be available to help you with any projects, promotion, etc via my consulting services so don't hesitate to inquire.
