About Me

Jeff Dread – Producer, D.J. Dubmerchant.Growing up in England, Jeff Dread acquired a deep love of Jamaican music that started from the wave of British Ska and Reggae bands that appeared in the late 70’s and early 80’s. It was dub though - the art of sonically manipulating an arrangement through a mixing desk loaded with effects - that really inspired Dread. Now based in Australia he creates cutting edge electro-dub for a whole new generation of deep bass fans. Over the last 2 decades he has been one of the main proprietors of the Reggae/Dub scene in Sydney and has been fortunate enough to play alongside such legends as Lee”Scratch”Perry & Mad Professor.Jeff Dread’s first release came in ‘98 on a compilation album by Creative Vibes’ “Dub for the Masses”. The track, “Dub the Farmers Daughter” later appeared as an extended version on his debut album “The Merchant of Dub”. This peaked the ears at Creative Vibes enough to have commissioned a full album of modern electro-dub stuff from Jeff. The result was “The Merchant of Dub. a fantastic mix of old and new themes that is the perfect accompaniment to long days down at the beach and hot evening sipping Cuba Libre's.His second album “The Merchant of Dub II - Return from Alpha One” quickly became a favourite among critics and DJs alike. This much anticipated follow up album was featured as album of the week on Alchemy Radio and TV, Sydney’s 2SER, 3D World, on the cover of Revolver Magazine and in Next Magazine.Dread then went on to produce “Dub for the Masses II”, [2001] which featured the likes of Sheriff Lindo, Crucial D, & Dub Congress. Dread’s music was also featured in the cult road movie “Bondi Tsunami” [2004].Jeff Dread has recently been working with Sydney dub band ‘Republic in dub’ and is currently working on his third album, to be released in 2008.
