Sir B (Brandon Friend) was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 13, 1983. He was raised in the suburbs about twenty-five minutes north of the city. Brandon grew up as a kid who loved the competitive nature of sports and the opportunity to entertain others. As he grew older, he found escape within the versatility of music and performing arts. Although the majority of musical genres were appealing to Sir B, he was ultimately drawn towards the infectious wordplay and rhythm of hip-hop culture.
He vividly remembers purchasing his first batch of hip-hop cassettes in 1991 at Tower Records during a trip to Harvard Square in Cambridge. Brandon’s strong suit in school was English and composition, so it became natural for him to begin writing lyrics of his own. He would constantly write songs and come up with ideas throughout his everyday life. B had found it very therapeutic to put his thoughts on paper and eventually began to develop a raw and passionate flow generated from the realness of the 90’s era.
With that being said, it is important to know that you will never catch this emcee stating that he lives among the majority of topics which plague today’s music. Unlike many of today's hip-hop acts, B will never claim to be something he's not. If you ever hear him on a song talking about hurting someone, he means lyrically. You may hear him discussing drugs and drug use due to his own battles, but never about selling them. He completely understands the fact that real recognizes real and he prides himself on speaking the truth.
Sir B uses creative and versatile wordplay while still being able to incorporate messages within his music, a feat that is not often accomplished by many of today’s artists. Even though you may hear him displaying his lyrical diversity by dropping extensive metaphors on a track, his main objective is to have people relate to the songs. Sir B stays true to the art of pure hip-hop music, drawing his listeners in with emotional lyricism which capture what he truly represents, the art of music.
While at college in Connecticut, B Friend created a name for himself across the campus as an emcee. He performed at a student run Apollo Night among many other diverse and talented acts. After returning home, he rocked the mic as part of the very first hip-hop ensemble at the prestigious Berklee School of Music in front of thousands. Sir B has since performed at multiple venues in and around the Boston area.
After narrowly escaping a near fatal car accident due to his own fault of drinking and driving, this now 25-year-old emcee continues to perfect his craft and has also returned to college to finish his education. If he's not studying for a degree, you can bet he's writing and recording new material.
His passion for music is unquestionable. B is currently working on his upcoming album, so stay tuned for new music if you appreciate the power of raw, emotional, energetic and thought provoking lyricism.
