Normally I would walk right past you and get on with my life; never looking back.
Things are not normal anymore because we are on an island. One we did not choose to be on and one that seems does not want to let go. We have become like a family because we have to depend on one another to survive here. For that reason, I’ll tell you my story.
I grew up in a wealthy family as an only child.
My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paik, had a shallow, but existing relationship with me as I grew up.
My mother was a social butterfly.
My father worked at a large office as head of the Paik Automobile Industry. The business had been in our family for some time. He was very strict and expected every one who worked for him to live up to his standards, including himself. He intimidated people with his power and gained more power from his intimidation. It was his dream to be wealthy and successful forever and if people were crushed in his path: well that’s life.
After I graduated high school, I went to college to major in Art History. I came home with no man holding my arm, so my mother took things into her own hands. She found a man who was rich, intelligent, kind, and single; only he wasn’t single. He didn’t tell me this right away. I began to fall for him. Than after about a month of seeing each other, he told me he was in love with another woman. He had become fluent in English, and was going to run away to America to marry her. I was shocked, but happy for him.We put on a show for little while longer then he left.
I overcame my disappointment by living.
There was this little park with benches, trees, flowers, a river, a bridge, and the details that I loved to take walks in. One day, like a silly school-girl, I nearly tripped over a man. We apologized then looked into each other’s eyes and I knew he was the one…. It sounds cheesy I know, but some times you can just feel a connection…..
We led our secret love life for a whileYou see he was poor. He worked an honest job as waiter, but he wasn’t in the social standing my parents would automatically approve of. I was scared, and wanted to take the easy way out. He insisted that we do it the right way by getting my fathers permission.
