Jimmy Golden & Jake the Snake Roberts (Fall 2007)
About Jimmy Golden:
I was born in Dyersburg, Tn. where my grandfather Roy Welch began what would become four generations of professional wrestlers.
My great-grandfather Ed
Welch was a Cherokee Indian and lived, at different times, on the reservations in Oklahoma. He had sons; Jack, Herb, Roy and Lester Welch all who became outstanding wrestlers.
One of Ed's daughters married Virgil Hatfield and they had sons; Lee, Don and Luke that
all wrestled as Fields brothers and had successful careers all around the Gulf Coast as
well as Dyersburg,Memphis, Louisiana, Alabama as well as other territories. This is
the list of the first generation of family members who actually wrestled and there were other family involved
in different aspects of the business.
Roy was the first in the
family to wrestle and helater became a world renown promoter while partnering with Nick
Gulas for a long andsuccessful career.Roy Welch and wife Bobbie Lee had two children Ruby Welch and
Edward Welch. Rubymarried Billy Golden and I am their only child. Edward married
Flossie Reed and theyhad sons Ronald Edward and Robert Andy Welch. Edward wrestled as
Buddy Fuller and Robertand Ron also took Fuller as their ring name. Billy Golden wrestled
and refereed but wasprimarily involved in promoting and booking.
I was trained by my
father and relatives andby a lifetime of going to the matches with my grandfather and
father. My parents divorcedwhen I was young so my father often had wrestlers living at his
place. I had lots ofexposure to different styles and methods of making it in this
business.
Frank Martinezwas the guy that taught me his famous drop kick and its always been
a favorite of my fans.Pancho Villa was a great one that taught me a lot about ring
psychology. He sure knew howto work a crowd and spent many hours with just the two of us in the
building. I guess Ilearned the most from the many hours on the road with my Dad
talking and sharing lifeexperiences and respect for the business.
Eddie Graham and Buddy
Fuller were two of thebest motivators and finish guys ever. If you didn't learn a lot
just going over a finishwith them you missed a valuable lesson.
A match I'll never forget was for the World Heavy Weight
Championship against Dory Funk. Jr. in the early 70's. He was such a great
worker that even while beating me, he made me look likea champion and I was so young to have that chance.
I've always
enjoyed working with my cousins Robert and Ronald Fuller. Ricky Gibson
was a talented worker and could have been worldchampion if things had gone differently and I value all the time we
spent working and livingtogether. Dirty Dick Slater was a good friend and great partner as
was Terry Funk.
I have wrestled as Jimmy Golden and as Bunkhouse Bunk
since being a part of WCW. I've held many titles and still enjoy the
chance to entertain the crowds.
It's a great business to have been involved in my whole life. I've
been around the world two and a half times and wrestled in at least eight
countries. I could talk for days about the things I've seenand done and the good times just keep coming. I am thankful my
injuries are all things I canstill work thru and wrestling is still one of my passions in life
after my family and friends.
