Wow,
what a line up!! : It’s likely to
be a sell out on the 28 th so we may have to do tickets, judging from
the enquiries we’ve had already, which incidentally have all been from
abroad!!
I
think the capacity at the Boston is 500, but I’m not too sure. (I’m sure
Cosmic Keith, who is running this event will know!) I’ve already started a
list for anyone that wants to be guaranteed a place, so if you’re definitely
coming then let us know. We’ll send you a confirmation email which you can
print off and bring with you, to show at the door, but don’t forget your 20
quid! If we decide to make this a ticket only event, we’ll make it public in
the next few weeks, but don’t worry if you’ve reserved a place as you’ll
be the first in line for tickets.
Here’s
a rough guide (very rough) to who’s on the bill. Well, I think we’ll start
with the Frantix
(Graham, Boz, Jerry, Roger and Neil), who are probably the laziest rockabilly
band around! I kid you not. They probably have 2 rehearsals a year, but just gel
on stage when they get together, and you’d swear they’d been gigging solidly
for years when you see them. They really are that good. The proof is in the last
45 (Duck Run B/W No Lovin’ No River Blues). Both these tracks were done in one
take with no rehearsal whatsoever, and the lyrics to “No Lovin†were
completely made up on the spot, proving that Jerry Brill is a rockabilly rapper!
Look out for a new CD from The Frantix containing vintage unreleased Toe Rag
recordings from the 80s, and recently recorded numbers, engineered in Graham’s
loft.
If
you’ve been on a desert island for the last year, then you won’t be aware
that The Playboys
are back with a massive fucking bang! I think they’re wilder than ever, and
those of you who saw them at The High Rockabilly will bear this out. Rob, Clive,
Ricky and Wayne are institutionalised rockers, who’ve been ensconced in the
Rock N Roll scene for the last 30 odd years. Like the Frantix, they gel on stage
like they’ve never been apart. A truly professional outfit who project a truly
massive sound.
London’s
Excellos
(Paul, Craig, Adam and Trevor) have been together less than a year, but in that
short space of time have built up a reputation as the No.1 rockin blues band.
Like Bo Diddley, they’ve got their own sound. You instantly know it’s an
Excellos number when the first couple of bars hit you. How the hell, that old
woman Jools Holland, hasn’t snapped them up for one of his shows is a mystery.
He’s supposed to like rockin’ blues, but seems to ignore the wilder side of
the scene. We’ll keep plugging the Excellos like all the bands on the label,
and might ask him for all our promos back, as they’re obviously wasted on him!
Hi-Voltage
are a big occasion band, who run on adrenalin like you wouldn’t believe. Sure
they’re a professional outfit who always turn in a top performance, but when
they’re playing to a big audience, they go into overdrive. Keith (the voice) ,
Paul, Kenny, Ian and Matt are going to be psyched up for this gig in a big way.
It’s unfortunate that they’re so far away. It’s a bloody long way from
Edinburgh, so we’re really pleased that they’re coming down to the Boston.
There wouldn’t be a Rollin’ Records gig if it wasn’t for them, as they
were the ones who inspired us to start this whole label thing.
Finally
there’s Paul
(the Gretsch) Paterson .
An immensely talented guy, who has taken up a solo career , as if he hasn’t
got enough on his plate with Hi-Voltage and Union Avenue! Paul is coming down
with a trio of hand picked musicians (inc Matt Curtis on bass), and an array of
guitars! Paul attacks all the rockin styles, be it rockabilly, surf, blues or
just plain old rock n roll, with the ease of someone who’s at the top of their
game. If you ask him nicely he might even sing.
Last
but by no means least are three great DJs. Cosmic
Keith, Steve Stack ‘O’ Wax
and Dave Crozier .
Household names to everyone on the scene, and all totally different in style. I
personally rate all three very highly and always take time out to hear what
they’re playing, as all like to throw in a few surprises!
So
there you have it. 8 fantastic acts and all for the price of 20 quid!! See you
there.
