History
Siglap Secondary School is the first co-educational secondary school in Singapore. Founded in 1955, the school marked the attendance of its first cohort of pupils on 10th January 1955. It was declared open in March the same year by the then Director of Education, Mr. R. M. Young.
The first Principal was the late Mr. Wee Seong Kang until his transfer to Gan Eng Seng School the following year. He was succeeded by the late Mr. Ismail bin Abdul Aziz who went on to head SekoIah Menengah Sang Nila Utama in 1961. The late Mr. O. K. Abraham then took over until his retirement in 1969 and was succeeded by Mr. S Natarajan who took over the helm until December 1984. We had a new principal Madam Daulath Tajuddin in January 1985. In December 1995, Siglap had a change in leadership when Mr. Sapii Kasamin took over. After 8 years of service, Mr Sapii Kasamin retired. Mr Ng Chee Kheong took over as the seventh principal of Siglap Secondary School. Mr Ng assumed office on 15 December 2003.
Siglap Secondary School had a humble beginning of only six Form II (Secondary One) classes, seven teachers and one Principal. In the early years, pupils could come in clothes of any kind so long as it was white. This colour has remained the colour for the boys' uniform till today. No special attention was given to the girls as they were considered temporary pupils.
The school colours, sky blue and sea green were later chosen as they reflected the natural ambience of the school. From the school which stood on Cheviot Hill, one could get an uninterrupted view of the sea and sky before the east coast reclaimation.
The school badge was designed by Mr. Francis Baruch, an Art Master in the school and the school motto was coined by the Principal, Mr. Wee Seong Kang.
The school song was originally in Malay with its lyrics composed by Encik Mashuri S. N. and music composed by the late Mr. Charles Lazaroo. It was later translated into English by Mr. J. G. P. Femandez, the Senior English Teacher then. Mr. Hashim Osman, music teacher of the school rearranged the song to give it an up-tempo version.
As the years passed, the need for a Domestic Science block for the teaching of Home Economics arose. Work on the new block began in 1966 and was completed in 1967. The extensions were declared open by Mr. Rahim Ishak, then Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and M.P. for Siglap. Siglap Secondary School was to remain a co-educational school for good.
In 1980, Siglap was also chosen to be a Pre-University centre to cater to pupils who did not qualify for admission to the Junior College. The intake for such students varied from year to year. In 1993, the last batch of Pre-University students graduated from the school as the Pre-University centre closed, reinstating Siglap as a full secondary school again.
The School Advisory Committee was formed in 1968 to promote closer relationship between members of the local community and the principal, teachers and students of the school. It also aimed to provide opportunities for the community to take an interest in the students' welfare and to provide better CCA facilities for the students. It sponsored fund-raising projects in 1970, 1973 and 1976 for the bitumen track and the sports pavilion which cost $115,000 and $391,000 respectively. The seating gallery was officially opened by Professor Jayakumar on 3rd September 1982. In 1998, our new campus was built. We left Cheviot Hill and moved to Pasir Ris. We had our last assembly and even a marathon! We set off from Cheviot Hill all the way to our new campus. Our new home! We stepped into the new campus and embarked a new beginning a journey to develop our pupils, both academically and aesthetically.
