About Me
Internal:
Myanmar or Burma (still called by some) is a country that has for decades (1962) been ruled by a murderous Military Junta who took control by force. In 1990, Aung San Suu Kyi earned the right to be Prime Mistster in the election, but the military refused to give her power and imprisoned her. She remains imprisoned, and is the only Nobel Peace Prize winner currently imprisoned. In 1991 she won a Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent democratic approach to the military dictatorship. People who speak of democracy are tortured and murdered. The rulers set land mines against their own people. They would love to eradicate the Karen people. The people are starving as the military Junta live like millionaires. HIV and malaria are spread rapidly, and health care on average is about $.50 per person, leaving those infected an extremely painful death. The state run media allows no one from the outside. Cameras, Camcorders, and even batteries are not allowed. Just over a month ago the price of gas sky-rocketed which led to the monks in Burma to protest. This frightened onlookers, the last protect in the 1980s led to tens of thousands of monks and civilians murdered by the government. During this last protest a Japanese reporter was shot dead in the street. All those suspect of being democratic are arrested by the government. Some of the detained were tortured, pictures taken, and put up outside of the places Buddhist go to worship. Fear is used to scare the people. Now that the protests have died down.. the world's media is silent again.. When will Burma ever be free? The military Junta could care less about treating the people humanely. They are getting paid off by the Chinese government. We are talking about the lives of 53 million people!
External: Burma or Myanmar, is located south of China, Southeast of India, and Northwest, of Thailand. It is rich in natural resources including oil and the finest rubies in the world. The government owns all land. China, India, Thailand, Japan, and companies like Total and Chevron make the ruling government a ton of money off of oil. Burma is also the second largest methamphetamine producer in the world. The country's military rulers have received guns mainly from Russia, some from China, and rule the people harshly, claiming that they must have these measures to keep the drugs out of the country. Their propaganda run newspapers such as 'Light of Myanmar' claim that the USA is sending the drugs to the country. In actuality the military often participates in this drug trafficking, often guarding the very places the drugs are made and sent. The drugs can enter into China and go through a series of checkpoints. The USA in years past (mainly 1940s) have sent troops over to Thailand to teach the people their how to shoot, kill, etc. and trained those guys to shoot the Burmese if they try to enter Thailand with drugs. China uses Burma to spy on India, and it has also been suggested that they can store certain things like nuclear weapon material. Roughly 80% of Burma's income comes from China. Twice, Russia and China have voted against UN intervention in the country, knowing good and well they are making a profit, and claiming that Burma's problems are 'an internal matter.' The ASEAN nations also refuse to help or intervene, many having human rights abuses themselves.
