About Me

^photos by matt goold
Paper Ashtrays is a songwriting project that had its umbilical chord cut in late 2007. Michael and Ryan Johnson, brothers, began the project with the idea of creating something powerful, they wanted to affect and inspire people, the way that they have been inspired by previous artists. Since the first spark, they have been working toward that goal, actively self-promoting and performing throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Jersey Shore areas. Originating in Belmar, NJ, the members have been writing songs for years and constantly playing music with friends, playing in each others bands and supporting each other. The duo has been experimenting with ways to keep the music interesting, attempting different ways to blend their intruments and voices and ways to evoke powerful images and emotions. Intrumentally, Mike is usuallly found on the acoustic guitar and vocals while Ryan plays the cello or electric guitar, with a growing collection of pedals to create the strange sounds that echo around his head. keep your eye out for Paper Ashtrays!
