"Big" Earl Matthews was born in Modesto California. He has always loved to sing. A friend introduced him to the blues when he was a teenager. He went to his first blues show at 19 - Tommy Castro, at the Sonora Blues for Aids show in 1996.
A year later, Earl migrated north to live in Humboldt County where he and a friend decided to form a band. Earl's first band, of the same name, played in and around Eureka from 2001 to 2006. Earl's music is influenced by blues greats such as Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Magic Slim and the Tear Drops, Taj Mahal, Robert Cray, Keb Mo, Howlin Wolf, and Big Mama Thornton.
In late 2006, Earl moved back to his hometown and hooked up with the members of the current version of "the Cryin' Shame", long-time Modesto musicians: Jason Finley, guitar; Jerry "Crazy Leg" Lee, drums; and Chip Yeager, bass. Big Earl and the Cryin' Shame has been playing locally and has enjoyed an enthusiastic response.
The instrumental side of the band is known for their original, simple, infectious grooves employing many different genres. The Cryin’ Shame draws not only from traditional blues, but also from rock, funk, jazz, southern rock, and rockabilly. The result is the creation of an innovative sound that works really well with Big Earl's soulful voice. Audiences often respond by immediately hitting the dance floor (or creating one!). Staying true to the mission of having a good time, this band provides a very positive, upbeat, energetic presence on stage that encourages involvement of the audience. If we are not having a good time, then what is the point!
Future plans consist of writing more original material, recording a CD, and bringing the groove to a stage near you.
